I think that's somewhat different. The government is beginning to go to far in trying to protect our health. I am not in favour of a nanny state. They are currently talking about banning happy hours and drinks promos because these encourage irresponsible drinking behaviour. If I want to drink irresponsibly, I damn well will, whether the government says I can or not.

Just how is soapy water unclean?
I agree about the washing clothes/hair - not because of having to wash my hair in the morning mind, but rather having to have a shower and wash my hair straight after I get home before I go to bed, something which makes me look like a puffball in the morning.
I have a proactive method of stopping smoking - whenever I see a friend smoke I take their cigarette and break it in half, perhaps we should all do this...

I would like to point out that the Students' Association has implemented a limited no-smoking policy for the Union building.

I will post it in full here for all to read for the purposes of informing you all as to the exact policy so that you know what the students think of the matter and so you know it was addressed. The minutes of that meeting are probably also available online thanks to the out-going chairman, Magnus Paterson.

I put the motion here because I know if I put a link to the website, few would click it. Also, not everyone has adobe acrobat, and there's no reason to force you to get it.

Motion to Adopt a New Smoking Policy

This SSC Notes:

The Union is a University building, which has a global blanket smoking ban.

However, we have bard and entertainment areas. This year, the Scottish Executive decided not to ban smoking in public bars.

We are also, at least until the new post-Nicolson legislation, a Private Members' Club and hold a Public Entertainment Licence for the performance of plays. It should be noted that under the licence, venues are no smoking areas whenever the public are admitted.

It has been suggested that discipline in connection with the no smoking rule breaches could be reinforced by University action, especially regarding University staff.

Finally, we have a legal and moral obligation to the providers and users of all our services that they may enjoy these services in a smoke-free environment.

This SSC mandates the adoption of the following Smoking Policy, to take effect at a time dictated by management:

All common areas, access corridors, fire stairs, offices and meeting rooms shall be no smoking areas. The only smoking area shall be the main lounge, with following provisos:

1. The integrity of a significant no smoking area is maintained.
2. Although willingly working in a smoking environment, bar and related service staff must be afforded the best protection by ventilation.
3. During the evening, when the Union reverts to a mainly social event / bar provider, this shall be relaxed, so that all bars and associated areas (except the designated no smoking area on the ground floor) are smoking zones.

If one of my friends did that to my (or anyone else's) cigarettes, I'd break their neck. One doesn't see many people ripping the exhaust pipes off of friends' cars, even though they pose a health and an environmental hazard.

Ahhh...but I have the advantage of being substantially bigger than my friends who smoke - maybe because the filthy habit of smoking has stunted their growth. Anyway, you can always run away afterwards - the puffed out smoky bastards will be coughing up what's left of thier lungs after 20 seconds.

well they banned smoking in the sheffield or leeds union bar, after 3 weeks they had to change it because takings were down so much. It would be better to have a special smoking area.

People smoking in public places has always been one of my pet peeves. I spent 10 years growing up in an area where indoor smoking was mostly prohibited or contained to small areas and I guess it spoiled me a bit. I don't mind the smoke so much in bars or pubs because it does seem to go along with the atmosphere. However there's almost nothing more annoying than eating out and having my meal ruined by someone smoking near by. The smoke makes me feel slightly queasy and ruins the taste of the food and my appetite. I was very shocked at a restaurant in Glasgow to see people smoking despite there not being any ashtrays in the building- they were just ashing on the floor. It took a lot of restraint not to take revenge on them for my ruined meal.

I'm sad to say the revenge wouldn't have been very clever or violent. More likely it would involve some cutting remarks to the offending smokers, followed by an hour or so of my feeling smug and self-righteous. To be fair, though, the particular restaurant had been chosen by my father on the basis of it serving a 'three course meal' for 3.20- so there wasn't much the people at the next table could do to ruin the meal that the poor quality of the food wasn't doing already. They also had the misfortune of eating the same shlock that I was forcing down, so I suppose that was punishment enough .
