The Rector has said something that nobody else in a high position has
dared to say for a very long time...his message boils down to this: many Americans here have nothing but COLD RICE between their ears.
I know, however, of a select few
(and a couple of them post on the Sinner; you know who you are) who are extremely intelligent, thoughtful and interesting, and completely unlike your countrymen, but they are sadly in the
minority.
I resent the fact that the thick ones come over to our country and then call e.g. St. Andrews a "quaint little village" or slag the place off because there are no drive-through dentists or megamalls the size of a small town.
Many of them are totally clueless about the realities of life and posess zero social skills. They try to impose their consumer materialism on everyone else. Guiding philosophy seems to be - my face is looking a little tired, so I'll trade it in for a newer one. My voicebox doesn't match my new youthful body, so I'll fix that. I don't like the shape of my tummy, so I'll get surgery.
Many of them frankly bore me to tears. Their innate suspicion of anything that isn't pre-packaged, formulaic, hygienic, safe for American citizens to consume is sad - witness the "McDonaldisation" of global society. Everythnig has to be done "their way".
You could spot them in town when the sun came out, because almost without exception they wore flipflops and jeans, that highly stylish combo if ever there was one.
They are renowned for their intelligent comments in tutorials, like: "Did John Knox invent Calvinism?" to which a KateBush patiently replied, "No, Calvin invented Calvinism".
Perhaps I should stop ranting; I am in a cynical and pessimistic mood and this tends to make me see the worst side of people rather than their best.
