and first off, I'm sorry to hear that you went through something as crappy as you did. That stinks and no-one is gonna blame you for having an attitude against anyone similar.
Overall, what I reacted to was the way in which this thread seemed to be running down the line that wascoming over as looking down on anyone else and doing so through "words and Pictures". Yeah, I know, I've said it before and we've been through all that.
The problem is that this University already has a reputation out there as being strictly for the snobs of this world and that rep refuses to lie down and die. And like it or not, the "words" that you and others were using seemed to reinforce that for anyone looking in from the outside. Even before my time - no really!! - the "words" were different. Words likes "oiks" and "yobs" were preferred back then. But they meant the same. "Famous 5" types who found it just soooo amusing how others talked. And that attitude was reflected in this thread with the crap about Translators and "understanding what they were saying" and all the rest. Not to mention the "19th Hole" crap about having kids early and often, living off decent tax-payers, being work-shy, not making anything of their lives etc etc etc. All good Thatcherite cliche snobbery from "Middle Englanders"
Interestingly enough, I've only come across the "working class hero" sneer from their successors as well. I usually associate it with VW Golfs, striped blue and white shirts with de rigeur collar turned up and the rest. I'm not too sure when it made its appearance elsewhere but it's fairly obvious that it's common currency now further on down the line. I just find it surprising that it's now in use by others who probably aren't of that ilk. And again it comes across as a sneering put-down directed against anyone who has the audacity to suggest there is an element of snobbery in deriding anyone else that isn't here.
I don't see anything either PC or "working class hero" in reacting the way I did. This place is supposed to be an open, broad-minded place where everyone is welcome and learns from being here. This University's experience over the past few years has probably enhanced its "snob" value and edged it further in that direction among those considering coming here. We don't need that because it will change the nature of the place. And, whether you meant it that way or not, that's how I read it when you put up the sites and others respond the way they did.

It's nice to see a coherently worded argument, and perhaps I was a bit harsh in calling you an "Egotistical wanker". My apologies.

I too have had nasty experiences with Neds here and at home (though not to the same extent as Humphrey, just being called a 'dirty fenian bastard' and other such unpleasantries), and that is why I get filled with rage at their websites, bragging about what nefarious activities they get up to, and I get even more angry when people accuse me of classism etc for airing my hatred of these troublemakers.
I equally loath the element of St Andrews students who do actively believe they are of more worth than other mere commoners at the uni, you know the type; daddys little angels with their american express platinum cards, air kissing and the apparent necessity to show everyone how wealthy they are (i once observed a group of yahs celebrating in ma bells the delivery of their cars to st andrews). Having money is fine. flaunting it and deliberately rubbing others noses in it is not acceptable.

I also spent a good 15 years as a Youth Worker and I've come across the guys you're talking about. "My guys" were nowhere near that level but you come across them and up close and personal. And there is a problem, no doubt about that.
It wasn't a case of defending them. It was more a case, that as a Graduate of this place, I reacted to how some here see others outside of the loop. And it does sweet bugger all for the reputation of this place if it is misread. This remains one of the best places to "grow up" and you'd be amazed at just how it gets under people's skin. You won't believe the number of piss artists from the past who come back for reunions because, years on, they still love the place and it has a special place in their hearts.

Problem seems to be that the impersonal nature of internet posting means that personal insults are thrown about willnilly, hence its taken a series of confusing rants to reach a common position. In using ‘working class hero’ as a derogatory insult I am referring not to those who stick up for those from working class backgrounds but those who take this position to extremes. I’ve lost count of the number of times (usually at a party when I’m just minding my own business) I’ve been accused by some twat of being completely undeserving and never having done a scrap of work in my life because I come from an ‘upper middle class’ background, a kind of reverse snobbery. I see what you are saying, but I really think you should visit these sites before you can really condemn us for being too judgemental. The people on these sites not only look like and sound like those who have personally offended me, they also glorify and promote the kinds of acts of vandalism, binge drinking and violence that many of us experience on a weekly basis.
