Personality Disorder

Postby tintin on Sat Jun 19, 2004 1:07 pm

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this (no, not my own!). Basically I met someone last night who believed that there were "people" in certain places, e.g. in a particular room, but not in another one, and would talk to them, telling them to either go away or get angry with them, asking them what they were doing there.

He could sometimes get a bit insistent that they were there, and made me at one point go into a room to talk to this person, because he was afraid of them. In another instance, though, it was possible to persuade him that one of the "people" was actually in another room, but he wasn't convinced. Another time he could "see" them through the letterbox, and shouted at them to go away.

As a person, he seemed to have reasonably low self esteem and was under a great deal of pressure to conform to his father's wishes (career-wise, and to continue the success of his business). Many people were "friends" with him because of his money rather than for who he was. He seemed to have a real need of affection and support i.e. this was perhaps not being reciprocated or provided by his family.

It's certainly not Multiple Personality Disorder, although he did have some mood swings, often unpredictable. His alcohol consumption is very high - but would this induce such a thing? He certainly had depression and was bullied, yet was able to fight back as he was reasonably well-built.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Edit - add: He was dyslexic as well.

Sounds like it might be some form of schitzophrenia - possibly paranoid.

Alright, I will have a pop at this.
Firstly, being dyslexic should not have anything to do with it, and this is not something that would be considered part of dyslexia. However, with all mental difficulties, it is possible that he may be more susceptible to another problem.
And I am not a doctor or a psychologist, but I would really try and make sure he can be checked out, as this sounds worrying to say the least.
And if he is a student, he can always get in touch with student support. But he sounds like he does need to see a professional about this.
If you want me to do some more digging on this, give me a shout on sso@st-and.ac.uk (my business address!)

The Voices

Postby Chain Mailer on Mon Jun 21, 2004 1:30 pm

If they believe that the people in the other room are talking about them, that's usually a sign of schizophrenia (pardon spelling) as one of the major symptoms are paranoia and voices. (Not a split personnality, thats MPD)
Though the large amounts of alcohol can have the same effect as it damamges parts of the brain that (basically) keep us sane.
Dunno if this helps :)

On the contrary; you're about the first person on the thread to spell it correctly.

He's probably just taking the piss.

either he's taking the piss, or they are psychotic symptoms. That can be schizophrenia but doesn't have to be, psychotic symptoms can also be induced by drug abuse or heavy alcohol abuse (but this would have to be much more than usual student drinking). I would say if he's rich these symptoms may have occured following cocaine abuse which is quite common.

if he does have hallucinations it definitely is time to stop taking drugs or drinking heavily and also to go see a doctor, preferably a psychiatrist.

Has nothing at all to do with multiple personality or obsessive/compulsory disorder.

I am shocked at all the diagnoses flowing around here without having met the person concerned. As a registered psychiatric nurse I recommend this person sees a professional. From the description originally given I expect that what is going on with this person may be one of a number of mental health problems. It can of course be difficult to get someone to agree to see a health professional if they do not think there is anything wrong. You could phone the GP surgery for advice if you are concerned for this person's safety/health.
