I for one like the postcards (this of course has nothing to do with the fact that they sport red hot chili peppers on the front... *cough*).

They are pretty much essential for Freshers, as now is the time that they are going to get excited/nervous/curious about coming here, so it just increases their enthusiasm. And they are a nice little reminder about Freshers Week for all returning students. I only started coming on The Sinner again a few weeks ago, but had I not, and had I not signed up to help through the week, then Freshers Week wouldn't be in my mind and the postcard would have sparked my interest.

I think we Sinners tend to forget that not everyone bothers checking stuff out on here or related to uni during the summer. Most students *will* have appreciated the postcards.

[s]Just thought that I'd add that Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Margaret Union have full time members of staff whose only function is to book major headline entertainments. You get better more money in the bar budget because you're not paying me £20,000 a year and yet we still have similar lineups.[/s]

Can't wait until Monday when the tickets go on sale.

I agree wholeheartedly with pea ;)

What on earth is all the fuss about?

Why are you making such a song and dance about a bit of money being spent on Nigella cookery book-esque postcards?

Take another prozac tablet and stop grumbling, or stick your head in a big fat bowl of punch or, I know, why not do both?

When I was a Fresher I was sent an extremely heavy envelope with an entire rainforestful of pamphlets, leaflets and so on about seemingly every society associated with the university - does this go out any more? Compared to that, a postcard doesn't seem that bad.

The entrance packs will be waiting for you Freshers when you arrive, rather than being posted out.

EDIT: And even thought the QM mght have a cack pre-sesh line uop, they are also the only scottish venue on the Polyphonic spree's UK tour. It's on all saints day, and i'm going.

do any bands go to st andrews as part of their tours? the pet shop boys did a student union only tour last year, but not for us.

If there was less competition there'd be higher prices - welcome to economics!

Its in Glasgow you fool, of course there is competition from other pubs, and something ive heard rumours of called a club, still trying to find one in St Andrews. Strathclyde union is cheap cos everyone goes, and everyone goes cos its cheap. They also have coolstuff happening, like last year they had a professional regurgatist.

The postcards were sent out on Thursday 26th.

Overseas postcards were sent via airmail.

US students have received their cards already.

Less money has been spent on postage this year than previous years.

If you have any more questions, please either email union@st-and.ac.uk or phone 01334 462700

But how do actually justify this gross wastage of association money? Why couldn't it be done via email?

I came to st andrews because I thought it was a place where students supported their union and tried to create a good atmosphere! What I am seeing on the sinner is a group of people that keep complaining. First about the line up for freshers week(btw it is not that bad! it is freshers week! we are there for the fun not because we are going to some kind of concert!) then about the union not having said earlier who was going to perform ( who cares!) and now you are even complaining about the post cards! For god sake! what do you want? It is nice that they send us a card just to 'remind' us! I think you guys need to stop for a second and think before typing!

Jesus, this is the first time I've looked at this thread, and I find some people are whinging about...postcards.

I mean, postcards.

Dear God.

Postcards.

I Know we're all bored, but, come on. Postcards. Surely there is something more worthwhile to argue about or discuss, e.g.
Should all NEDS and Yahs be neutered at birth? Why is Brian Lang so great?
Is there conclusive proof that Bears shit in the woods?

I haven't even got mine yet anyway

that would indeed be cool.

ever since they showed a pie (or was it spaghetti?) eating competition on Round the Twist years back i've wanted to see one.

there's something quite moving about the idea of synchronised vomiting.
