Virgin Broadband

Postby elpedro999 on Sun Dec 05, 2004 3:57 am

At the start of this semester we were looking around for cheap broadband connection for the flat. we finally settled on virgin as it had no contract and NO DOWNLOAD LIMIT!!! it seems now they have changed their mind. we got a nasty letter through the post the other day saying users had been downloading to much and they were restricting us to a certain small amount.

did anyone else get this letter?
what are you planning to do about it?
are there any other services that offer no contract and no download limit?

Taken from Virgin's website

What is the Fair Usage Policy?
This isn't a fixed limit or cap, but a discretionary policy, which will apply to all Virgin.net Broadband plans. This will be applied if a customers' usage levels affect others' enjoyment of the service. We request that customers on Plan One do not exceed 20 GB (upload or download) a month as a guide. To help you put that into context, that's over one million web pages a month and we've only ever seen a handful of customers go over this limit. As always, if you do upload or download 20 GB of data, we'll give you plenty of warning and talk you through the various options available.

Have the 4 of you managed to break the 20 gb by any chance? :D
What's the limit they hit you with?

We also have Virgin broadband, other than our connections being a little tempromental sometimes ours has been fine. I'm guessing you got the £25pm package as well. What have they limited you to out of interest?

Any broadband provider that claims to provide unmetered (limitless) service without a length-of-service contract always has a "by the way, please don't download more than x GB a month ok" clause in the terms and conditions.

There are a few providers who do nine-month contracts for students so they don't pay for service over the summer they won't use; I forget who they are and it's a bit late for one of those dealies now.

If you want a reliable, no-limits broadband connection you will have to pay extra for it. Look through http://www.adslguide.org.uk for a list; I'd recommend Pipex because they're the only ones I've ever used and they've always been awesome.

Zen broadband have no limits, but they so have contracts - BUT they can be cancelled easily at one months notice.
