StarBucks In St Andrews

Postby petefryatt on Wed Jan 12, 2005 9:13 pm

Just got a letter through my door, apparently Starbucks have applied for planning permission to move into the old bookstore John Smith & Sons. Does anyone else feel that we kinda have enough coffee shops? I mean they'll be about 10 doors away from Costa, can't anybody think of a better use for this space?

Death to Starbucks and their nasty, bitter, over-roasted coffee.

Aaaah! I liked St. Andrews for its anti-commercialism...is there anywhere I can escape?

Starbucks is going to get so much more custom! They are far superior to costa....well in my opinion!there chicken ceaser sandwiches are to die for...but alas, they make them no more :(

why are the council or whoever it is that decides who is allowed to do business here allowing so many coffeeshops?! we already have enough! beanscene is new, and no-one missed it before it arrived, and there is a new one opening next to bonkers right across from costa, there is the Ark, the ladyhead, the weird teapotshop place, northpoint cafe, the old union diner, macgregors, bella italia, the wee china shop/coffee place across from mackays, janettas... AND most pubs serve hot drinks during the day (or so it seems), and lots of restaurants do too!

oh... i forgot taste... and java junction... and the wee sandwich shop next to java junction which sells hot drinks too (doesnt it?)... and all the hotels double as restaurants/coffee places too.

oh... and the wee place that used to be german's best, you know... on bell street.

and now starbucks are thinking of moving here too?! there is simply NO NEED!

st. andrews must surely have the most hotdrinks establishments per square metre in the whole of the UK, right?

Have you seen Glasgow city centre? Three Starbucks within about 300 yards of each other. In Borders you look out the window and there's another one of them, and then they went and opened a big fuck-off one on Buchanan Street. And there are another two just a few minutes walk away.

And I don't even like coffee.

That is the corporate strategy. Grant a number of short/medium-term franchises in a small area. Maintain consistently low prices in all stores and undercut other businesses on like-for-like basis. Take the short-term hit on income as high sales are offset by multiple rent obligations. Once competitors in the area have closed due to their inability to compete on price, advertising and shop numbers, begin a medium-term process of ending the least profitable franchises in the area and thereafter enjoy higher profits due to increased presence in the market.

St. Andrews will no doubt be a variation on this theme.

Hahaha, I wonder if it actually does. Flarewearer, I see your point but I think it would be a shame to see wee independant coffee shops go down the drain, thanks to Starbucks. Glasgow city centre is swarming with Starbucks (the one on Buchanan Street is huge[). Don't get me wrong, I love a Starbucks gingerbread latte but am not a fan in general.

It is an irony, is it not, that although St Andrews has so many coffee outlets, it's enormously difficult to find somewhere which serves good coffee?

A: They do serve things other than coffee
B: My friends like coffee, sometimes they go into the shops and Ihave something from the 'non-coffee' selection on offer
C: I never said I went into their shops, just that were many of them and that such a thing is unnecessary

And before you say anything I accept your apology, you probably were stressed with all this revision and didn't read it properly.
