Strangely a friend and I were discussing before christmas (when sitting in a Starbucks in Dundee) that although it would be completly unnessecary, St Andrews should knock out Costa and build a Starbucks instead, as their coffee and other ranges of drinks are all far superior. I also think we found them to be cheaper than Costa. I don't really care anyway, I mean its not like many of us plan to stay here after we finish our degrees so it will affect us for how long? a couple of years tops for most people.

I'm not sure what I think of this. Like papercutheart already said, I do enjoy living in a place without too many branded places.
I probably won't go into starbucks at all.
But that being said, I didn't realise BeanScene was a chain til awhile ago.
And so is Costa.
So there's quite few really independent places here.
I'm going to have to think more about this....

There are now 9 Starbucks in Glasgow :O I wouldn't call the Buchanan Street one huge but it does look a bit intrusive :( I think it was inevitable that they'd open one in St Andrews too, they'll definately get the business. Gotta admit I love the stuff they do, but I just hope it wouldn't mean the end of Taste :(

If people are so really dead against this then why don't you try to complain to someone (the council or whatever). There were recently plans to build a McDonalds in my home town, which is smaller than St. Andrews, but due to the number of complaints made by residents to the council the plans had to be scrapped.

Lets get a petition running. Not that it would make any difference anyway, Aikman's petition didn't make a scrap of difference despite having nearly 2000 signatures on it.
I'm sure that I was told St Andrews has the most pubs per square kilometre at some point, and judging by the number of cafes/coffee shops for such a small town, the same is probably true.

It's like that episode of the Simpsons where Bart gets an earing/tatoo and the shop is closing in 5 minutes for a Starbucks when every other shop in the mall is already a Starbucks......

my gripe is not against starbucks, or coffee... and i will even grant that if there is a market for another coffee shop, then let there be another coffee shop.

i would just like to see some diversity. the town council likes to prevent the influx of businesses that will harm the "quaint" style of st. andrews as they believe it could harm the tourist economy, and damage our common heritage. SO... mcdonalds is not allowed in.

how therefore can they justify allowing every second shop to be a coffee shop, every third to be a pub and such?

i would like to see a broader range of shops... pubs and coffee shops are great, but doesnt anyone fancy seeing something else?

A change is as good as a rest. I'm not quite sure how that fits in here, but in short I agree.

It may seem like there are more than there are. There are, in fact, 9 in Glasgow (counting the new one on Buchanan St) and 10 in Edinburgh - and there are only 2 on George St and 1 on Princes St, so nothing like as many as you seem to think.

definitely, and fewer mini fashion boutique things as well! A decent bookshop is a MUST, another deli would be nice too, to show Butler and company how its REALLY done.

There used to be another deli, in the little arcade that is now the new Boots. I loved it, so much better than Butler and Company, but it lost customers to B & Co. Presumably its locale was thought a little shabby by some?

Hopefully Starbucks will come in and drive the others out of business...then some more useful shops can fill the space

Perhaps we can have more things like Thorntons opening just next to an old established sweet shop so morons who recognise branding over quality can help drive the local businesses out and plasticise the entire town making it more comfortable for tourists.

Sniff. The Mercat Centre, home to the most awesome of cheese shops/delis... and it's own little army surplus store...
I will never forgive Boots for taking the Mercat Centre away from me.

Yay! Someone else who remembers. They did the best cheeses and cold meats, fresh breads, pickled items, jams and spreads and all at extremely reasonable prices.

RIP Mercat Centre.
