So, Charles Clarke, former scourge of students, is just as bad as Blunket. Anyone can now be placed under house arrest without charge. Any political student activists out there? Enjoy your curfew.

WTF... this is so wrong. I think it was Thomas Mann who said in a place where books are burned soon people will follow. Okay, no books burned here, but starting to violate human rights in any form can easily lead to much, much more. the world needs to be so careful to where it is headed.

I can't believe the 'free democratic west' is going there and just following Bush's footsteps! and the they complain when their 'newly freed' nations copy them.

Does nobody in the government understand that laws like this actually actively encourage terrorism??????

I could give a long long list, but internment without trial has been a complete failure in the past.

Can the british government not learn from their mistakes?????

another abuse of power from Labour. this could be worse than in the states, where you could pull out your pocket constitution to defend yourself against an unlawful search or detainment - we don't even have a written constitution.

and when is Tony Blair going to release all the transcripts of the advice and information he received when building the portfolio to invade Iraq, as required under the Freedom of Information act? never?

For Fucks sake this country is turning into Soviet Fucking Russia. Like jesus. as much as I cant believe Im gona say this, and really i cant believe it, but Thatcher, cant you come back and send out the police and the army to illegally do it again. Rather than have it enshrined into our constitution???

At least while it was illegal then, it could only happen only very rarely...

I never thought I'd hear an argument for Thatcher coming back that actually made sense. How scary is that!

Please, please, someone tell the Labour party leadership to read some history books!

Blood is a cleansing and sanctifying thing, and the nation that regards it as the final horror has lost its manhood... there are many things more horrible than bloodshed, and slavery is one of them!

Please please please someone just shoot them. I wouldn't call it terrorism as the aim isn't to scare the populace, rather just to get rid of some dead wood at the top.

Its Ironic that Blair's speech at the Auschwitz thing said that the holocaust didnt start with Auschwitz and death camps, but with smaller things. Cant he see that eroding liberties is EXACTLY the same, whether it happened 50 years ago or today.

I realise I've said this before, but all these laws are coming into effect, to 'protect' us from acts of terrorism. When was the last time Al-Qaeda attacked Britain? (never)
How many people have been killed by terrorism in Britain since september 11th? (none)
They're doing all this stuff to 'protect' us from a threat which is so miniscule its laughable.

Basically, this means, at any time, someone could burst into your room and arrest you without trial or evidence, and hold you for as long as the law stands with no justification.

It's a very scary thought....

Ah, now according to the news, Charles Clark has said that not only would the suspect be placed under house arrest, the suspect's entire family would be as well!

The government has been eroding our liberties since it came into power. To take a small example, lorry drivers now have to prove their innocence if they are found with 'illegals' stashed in their vehicles.

The government wants rid of the ban on the use of phone tap evidence in court. According to the Scotsman the only reason that the ban has stayed in place relates to practicalities rather than over-arching principle.

We have joined that Euro club of states that do not offer citizens the automatic right to trial by jury.

The Asset Recovery Agency prides itself on taking the assets of potential criminals before guilt is proven (the onus shifted so that the 'criminal' has to prove their innocence)

Think of how many things you as an individual cannot do now that you could in 1997, 1950, 1900, 1850, anytime really before our own day.

Fight id cards also, they are the most important link in the chain of totalitarianism. but that has been said elswhere.

In scotland the prosecution have always had the choice as to wether or not the trial is by judge or jury.
