Only modules of at least 3000 level taken in at least third year count - so if you do MT3501 in second year its grade will NOT affect your degree class. It does count towards any "you need x credits at 3000 level" requirements your degree has.

Exam results are usually released as and when the Registry are given them, they are innundated with results this close to the final result submission deadline, which is 1pm tomorrow. If they organised the things properly it should be a trivial matter to input the results to the records.

No, if the above replies weren't clear enough.

Summary

mean 16.5 or greater = First

mean 16.0, median 16.5 or greater = First

mean 16.0, median 16.0 = still a chance of a First if they like you

and someone was wrong to complain that the medain dragged them down becasue of a few bad grades. Quite the opposite, the median is less affected
by outliers than the mean. Two bad grades in junior honours drags my mean below 16.5 but the median is still well above the 17 mark, though I suppose it helps that I have JH, SH and a masters year contributing what is now a hell of a lot of modules.

Anyway,
how to calculate a credit weighted mean
(which I'm sure you already know)

multiply each individual grade by the corresponding number of credits and total them up. Divide by the total number of credits.

how to calculate a credit weighted median (wee bit lengthy)

As far as I know all modules are worth credits which are a mulpiple of five so use that. Now write down all your grades but if a module is worth ten credits write down the grade twice and if its worth twenty credits write it down four times and so on.
Now once you have done this for all your modules score off the highest grade at the same time as the lowest grade. Do this until you have either one or two grades left. If you have two take the mean. That is your credit weighted median.

A wee bit of digging in the inbox uncovers the following helpful info.

HONOURS CLASSIFICATION ALGORITHM

In May 2003, Academic Council approved the introduction of a new algorithm to determine Honours classification. The "new" algorithm was not used for determining the classification but was tested in May 2004 along with two other versions. Following a review of the results it has been decided that the University will continue to operate the algorithm that has been used for the past several years with the proviso that discrimination will now be improved by using grades reported to one decimal place at all stages including the final calculation.

The table showing how the algorithm works can be found at the following web link:-
http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/registry/ac ... sclass/alg

Please note that the pass grade remains at 5.0.

In addition, Academic Council reviewed and approved a set of rules relating to the algorithm. These can be found at the following web link:-
http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/registry/ac ... lass/class

Please note in particular that in the case of loss of Permission to Proceed (PtP) in a 3000-level, 4000-level or 5000-level module, a grade of "0" will be entered into the calculation even though no credits are obtained for the module with respect to meeting the requirements of the Honours degree programme.

Students are strongly encouraged to read the other rules which will apply.

Comparative Marks

In case there are any confused North Americans out there, I thought this might help. I'm copying it off the back of my transcript, so there's no debating it!

20 -- A+ 4.33
19 -- A+ 4.33
18 -- A 4.00
17 -- A 4.00
16 -- A 4.00
15 -- A- 3.67
14 -- B+ 3.33
13 -- B 3.00
12 -- B- 2.67
11 -- C+ 2.33
10 -- C 2.00
9 -- C 2.00
8 -- C- 1.67
7 -- C- 1.67
6 -- D+ 1.33
5 -- D 1.00
4 FAIL

I know what my grade will translate to at home, but I am still confused by this grading system. This whole thing with percentages and 1s and 2s and weighting with the degree programs...arghhhh....i'm glad I don'thave to worry about it. And I thought OUR ways of determining GPA and things like that were screwy. Especially the UC system, where they do give A pluses but they are only worth 4.0 (just like regular As)

What am I going to do if I manage to get into grad school here? argh

3 lectures = 7.5 in SA1001 if that helps people understand. One ,missed tutorial and a week late essay as well.

There are programs out there that you can download that will calculate your avg weighted grade . . . cant remember where I got mine, but they shouldn't be too hard to find. If you're really that worried about it, get one.

Its OK. As far as i'm aware, this is the only screwed up university to use this idiotic system, though I could be wrong. My sister was given her mark in percentages I beleive. Which makes one hell of a lot more sense. 80% is a 1st, or something. thats easy enough to understand.

No. CMM (MD 2942) has yet to appear.

Am going nuts here - I could understand if they'd at least told us we'd be getting it late - as ever with that particularly poorly organised course, in the dark time.

It's only the result am most worried about.

when will they be online?! I thought the deadline was 1pm when they had to be available to us?

Will this university ever sort out its administrative difficulties? thousands of students continue to ponder the eternal dilemma.... meanwhile, university staff are on their eighteenth coffee break of the day, blissfully unaware of their universally acknowledged incompetence.

also, do dissertation results get released the same time as exams? Or do we have to wait even longer?
