Why are so many people in St Andrews conservative?

Postby Guest on Tue Mar 15, 2005 12:40 pm

Considering that Scotland is a predominantly centre left wing/socialist country, and the typical student is seen as rebellious, why ARE there so many conservatives in this town? Its not as if they're going to win an election any time soon, and if they do... god help us all

Hmmm, you say conservative, but the last part of your post implies Conservative. Which one do you mean?

Well, firstly the Scots are a minority here. Secondly, there are a lot of rich people here and the Tories generaly give a better deal to the well-off. Thirdly, Labour are shit. Economicaly right wing and socialy authoritarian, I can't see them as any better than the Tories.

It's only a matter of perspective. I'm from Indiana. If you want conservatives, come see where I live. As far as I'm concerned, St Andrews is full of leftwing fuzzy liberal nutcases...

I would have thought that although most students tend towards an anarchist/leftist view of politics, it is generally said that people get more conservative with age. Also, it is said that people get wiser with age.
It must be symptomatic with so many wise people being here. Either that, or a more likely explanation is that the social demographic of St Andrews students is more similar to that of the typical Conservative grassroots support than that of the typical socialist/left-wing support.
I suggest that provides the real answer.

You say that 1) Scotland is predominantly left-wing, and 2) students are naturally rebellious, yet you're surprised that there are a lot of conservative students? I'm not seeing the logical problem.

How many of these right wing students are Scottish?

I've yet to meet one.

Erm quite a few of the members of Torysoc are Scottish.

Why would a Conservative government be so bad? Do you know anything about their current policies? Labour aren't exactly doing well, and the LibDems are not worth considering.

" Do you know anything about their current policies?"

Tax breaks for the dead spring to mind. Why the hatred of inherritance tax? surely unearned wealth should be taxed at least as much as earned? Also, despite feeling regret at the loss of our historic regiments, I can't agree with the Tory policy of keeping them at a cost of £2.7 billion if they're not needed. Their plan to charge interest on student loans fills me with dread.

Given that students tend to be leftist, surely it is precisely the unashamed conservatives who are the rebellious ones.

I'm also tempted to contend your implication that Scotland is inherently left-wing.

Because a lot of people don't want to leave university, get a job and instantly start haemorraging money to people that seem to think the middle class has a moral duty to pay for their indolence.

I agree with Comedy's first post about the background of a lot of St Andrews students resembling closely the section of society that Tory voters generally come from.

I take it the orignal poster is insinuating that there is something wrong with being a Tory?

The AGM has not happened yet. Once the date is fixed, you'll be sent an email well in advance to let you know.
