Hypoglyco

I\'ve started going blue and shaky for no reason. It once happened at a ball, and I colapsed (I\'d only had one drink). When the ambulance arrived they told me Ihad crashingly low blood sugatr, but I don\'t get why. I eat pretty reguarly - sometimes healthily, sometimes not. I\'m not under weight. I eat when I\'m hungry and make sure I get lots of fruit and salad (as I loathe cooked veg). Yet it suddenly creeps up on me that I go blue, and shake. Why is this and how can I stopit? I\'ve been eating things with slow release enery like flapjack not cake, or apples not bananas or brown rice not white, but its not making a difference.

Also, ironicaly, when it happens, I\'m meant to eat - but it always makes me utterly nauseus so I cant.

Hello! Have you been to see the doctor about this? You might just be hypoglycaemic (a tendency to have low blood sugar), but you could be diabetic (as am I). Are you more thirsty or urinating more frequently? Feel free to mail me (jlk2) if you want any advice :o) Hope things get sorted out for you.

keep some dextrose sweets handy, they are easy to eat and get the ole' blood sugar back up. you can get them in boots and they come in a range of tasty flavours. Oh and go see your doctor to be tested for diabetes etc.

Definitely hypoglycaemia as an opinion. I'm a diabetic as well - they are the classic symptoms you get w/ low blood sugar. With you it's probably an overactive pancreas. As above, do please go see the doctor and I'm sure you'll get some decent advice.

Blood sugar monitor is all very well as are slow carbohydrates but perhaps up your overall carbohydrate intake, the worst times are usually before lunch, that ring true? Check for the signs such as perhaps an empty feeling and get at least 10+ grammes glucose inside you then eat something more substantial. If it's as bad as creeping up on you with no warning, try the habit of food between meals. Cereal bars are a good plan usually and carry glucose tabs. And don't worry about all this eating, your safety is more important!

In long run watch out for Type-2 diabetes as your pancreas may suffer from being in overdrive in future.

Hope that's some help and that you get things sorted out,
Iain.

Wouldn't an undiagnosed diabetic be suffering from hyperglycaemia due to no insulin to store sugars? Is hypoglycaemia not from taking to much insulin or not enough food in diabetes?
Anyway go and see a doctor. I dont think its diabetes but it could be the opposite problem- an overactive pacreas. Speculation on the internet wont help much.

As a hypoglycaemic myself, I have to say what you describe sounds awfully familiar. However, hypoglycaemia is only a condition, it can have a myriad of causes. A diet without enough complex carbs or enough protein can cause your blood sugar to crash. So can a diet too high in simple sugars. An overactive pancreas will burn through your blood sugar and cause it to drop. An underactive pancreas (or diabetes) will not create enough insulin to make glucose into blood sugar, so your blood sugar level will drop. Thyroid problems can also cause blood sugar to drop.

In other words, see a doctor. Simple blood work can test for diabetes or thyroid problems. If those both come back negative, then chronic non-diabetic hypoglycaemia (overactive pancreas) is probably your culprit.
