Yes, I knew. But I expected it to be better organized, and the promises of the VIP ticket sounded wonderful. And I really didn't know the music. The names meant nothing to me. Really, most of the problems could have been solved with more organization- dealing with the drinks (at least VIP), more chairs, less fighting through mobs (a larger venue would have seen to that. Garbage cans and chairs are also a part of planning and organization. More thinking would have also meant they worked out the whole jag thing ahead of time. One of the reasons given for that whole screw up was because of the construction stoplights- but it's not like that appeared out of the blue. Those have been there for quite a while.
Planning would have also resulted in some vegetarian options.

First off I'd just like to say that I had a pretty good time at the ball. This was largely due to some perseverance and luck on mine and my girlfriend's parts. The drink ran out at the bar on the dancefloor after about an hour, even though they were only letting people have two bottles at a time. There was no way in hell we were going to go queueing at the main bar- might has well have written off the rest of the night by attempting that. So the key was to fight to the top at the bar nearest the fairground rides where any semblance of a queueing system had broken down early. This we did, and joyfully discovered that they were handing out 4 double vodkas per person! 2 or 3 rounds of those sorted us for the night.

But we were lucky. I'm quite sure the vast majority of people were pissed off with the organisational aspects of this years ball.

Some problems we encountered:
* A mate of mine had two friends coming from Aberdeen and two from Edinburgh. When he picked up the tickets, he wasn't informed that he had to pick up wristbands on the day of the ball. We realised this at 6:30pm, 2 and 1/2 hours after the wristband pickup had closed. We phoned the number on the tickets and explained our dilemma. Between bouts of phone-hockey, we were told stuff along these lines: "there are 2000 people attending the ball and we can't be worried about 5 of them", "we're not making any promises, but we'll see what we can do. if you don't get the bands, you'll get a refund". For minimum 60 quid a ticket you'd expect a bit more than that. We decided to get our asses into town, to see if we could sort it from there (we were having our own wee champagne reception at my mate's house). Thankfully, when we arrived near the buses one of the KK lads just happened to have the wristbands on him there, so we got sorted. Funny how they couldn't have told us that over the phone.

* The smoke machine was blowing large amounts of dry ice into the faces of the crowd at the front for Groove Armada. This is a safety issue. My g/f and I had to hold our breaths every time it blew at us. The organisers are lucky someone wasn't concussed by this. I complained to both a security guy and a KK guy about this, both of whom just ignored me. Mind you, I was a bit pissed and thus my exact words were "You're blowing far too much CO2 into the crowd!\"... so their reactions probably aren't all that surprising. Still though...that machine should not have been blowing straight into peoples faces, depriving them of oxygen in a crowd situation.

that sounds like muppetry to the highest order on the part of the KKK, dry ice usage and smoke usage should be kept to a minimum in that situation and not aimed at the crowd, it should be used more as a stage cover, *sighs*

at least the New Hall Ball got its usage right.. Kudos to the organisers

The orginisation it must take to put something like the May Ball together would be phenomenal and they plan it for months. I had to wait over an hour for my Jag and by the time I got there the food was pretty much done and there was no casino currency left, but, you know what? Worse things happen. I had a fucking brilliant night. If I had a foo style trilby hat on (I'm sad that I don't), I'd take it off to the KK.

Yes, that is one thing i would say. Even though there were so many fuck ups the members were more than willing to be excellent hosts and do their best to sort them out. I would say however I am very glad i was working there rather than attending.
