I'm wanting to go to the states at the end of august, what sort of price do reckon i should be able to get a return airfare for from london to new york or washington and i'm not picky about the day or time of travel?

A couple of years ago I flew to New York from Heathrow in mid-August.

I seem to remember the cheapest flights were the ones that stopped in Iceland or were Asian airlines stopping over in London, such as Air India... £200-300 maybe for those but for British Airways and others, rather more I imagine, £400 and above perhaps. Try Expedia or the Union's own travel service.

In the end, I managed to go on Air Miles

If you fly out of berlin, there's a flight for about 500 euros. So all you'd need to do is get a cheap flight to berlin and back.

Go to the travel office.. They have good deals.. or check out www.lastminute.com and see if you can find anything.. or www.travelocity.com or www.expedia.com both have UK & US sites...

I flew from Glasgow to JFK last Tuesday on Iceland Air - there is a 4 hour stop over in Rejkyavik but a free trip to the Blue Lagoon in that time (offered by the airline on all flights to the USA from Scotland to promote tourism in Iceland) - it is one of the cheaper airlines and the free trip to the Blue Lagoon was great. Would definitely recommend it!

I\'ve used IcelandAir a few times, always Glasgow-Rejkyavik(sp?)-States, but I never got no free trip to the Blue Lagoon. I did however get woken up on the return journey by the Valkyrie stewardess who insisted I check out the landscape of Greenland at dawn. Come to think of it, I wonder if that was the same stewardess that spilled coffee on me on the outward bound plane. Blonde hair, blue eyes, winged helmet, battleaxe...maybe.

Seriously though, Icelandair are cheap \'n\' cheerful. And you might fly over a town called Caribou, if you\'re lucky enough to have one of those planes with the little map on the tv screen. Also, you\'ll be brainwashed into believing that ICELAND\'S WATER IS CLEAR, CRISP AND REFRESHING. Which, to be fair, it is.

As someone who's had at least twenty transatlantic flights in the last six years, I can tell you: check out statravel.com, they usually have the best deals for students. Expedia and Travelocity can have good deals as well. All the usual stuff like travelling midweek and not during holidays applies.

I usually flew on Icelandair from Glasgow to Boston(about 200-250 pounds, should be same or cheaper if you go to New York), and I liked the stopover in Reykjavik (between 1/2 hour to four hours) because I can't sleep on planes, so I didn't have the 8 hours in a row of sitting still like you do if you fly from London.

Virgin Atlantic also had really good deals on the student travel sites, about the same price as Icelandair's but they fly direct from London.

Just bear in mind that cheap/student airfares have the most restrictions so don't plan on making any changes to the ticket.

Since it is the end of August you are probs going at then end of the most expensive time to travel. I flew direct from Glasgow to Newark at the end of August last year and it cost me £468 i think, with Continental Airlines! Was a great flight and so easy since it was direct, I'd reccomend them!
So jealous! I so want to be going back over!

It's very very hard to beat the prices you'll get from STA travel. Give them a phone and see what they can do.

I also second IcelandAir, but they are not always that cheap actually. The stopover in Iceland is cool though.

I would suggest waiting a month or two then you are more likely to get more deals. The end of August is peak travel time in a lot of places in America. Here in Vegas it's extremely expensive. If you wait till november you would bemore likely to get deals on flight and hotels. Virgin Atlantic is expensive but they offer a lot of direct flights. Good luck, have fun over here.
