getting between lectures

Hi

I will be a new first year in september studying Modern History (which is at 12 noon)

I also hope to take Moral Philosophy (which is in the afternoon). I also want to take Geography but it's at 11am.

As I understand matters Modern History lectures are not near Geography lectures? Is this the case? So how do lecturers deal with it? It could be a problem for me couldn't it?

Did anyone in the past do first year Modern History and first year Geography together and how did they get round this problem.

if history is in physics and geography is in the irvine as i sspect it might be... you just have to walk very briskly, or be late.

a bike might be a good investment, but it isn't a major distance to do.

Run....loads of people do it, and lectures usually dont start bang on the hour..dinnae fash, it will all be fine!! Wooooooo!!!

The most comfortable solution is a bike.

But it's not impossible to be on time at your lectures.

An academic hour is 50 mins, giving you 10 mins to get from one lecture to another, which is enough for St Andrews

I did Geography and Modern History this year (1st year) and it really wasn't that much of a problem. Geography is probably going to be in the Purdie building in the North Haugh whilst Modern History will be in the Buchanan, which are about 10 mins walk apart. You should be able to make it easily - you'll probably get to History for about 5 minutes past 12. I was always about 15 mins late though because i took detours on the way because i HATED 'Modern' History and dropped it after 1st semester. I don't class the 15th and 16th centuries as modern so it was completely boring for me. I'm not trying to put you off the subject though :p

This is only by St Andrews standards... To someone from a 'normal' town they are fairly close!

The lecturers often don't care about such matters providing you are discrete. Most of the science lecture theatres have back entrances anyway. (I don't know about the Arts lecture theatres.)

They walked - its ten minutes (at most) between any two academic buildings (excluding Gatty Marine Laboratory). Most lectures finish at five minutes to the hour, and the next starts five minutes after the hour.

Officially lectures are supposed to end at 5 to the hour and begin at 5 past. However this is often not the case for one reason or another and in any given lecture there will be some people who are late because they have to travel across the town. Its not usually a problem and lectures with a high number of students who cannot get there in time will often start a little later because of this. The only problem I have ever had from a lecturer was with my IT tutorial, which started at 10 in North Haugh and my geography lecture usually finished dead on 10 in the Irvine building. After a few weeks of walking in late to a disapproving glare, I explained to her why I had to be late and it was fine.

Anyway, its not something that you have to worry about too much!
