Lost in Translation was based on a whiskey commercial Sean Connery did in Japan.

Rice Crispies are known as "Pif! Paf! Pouf!" in German, "Cric! Crac! Crouc!" in France and "Knisper! Knasper! Knusper!" in Dutch. I fail to see how they make any of the above noises.

But they definitely go "snap, crackle and pop!"
(And didn't someone once hear them say "fuck you?")

In the cold war, the Government was worried about supplying products "essential to the national character" in the event on a nuclear war. For this reason, throughout the 1960s the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries designated “Regional Tea Officers” to be responsible for its supply in wartime. For without tea, the nation is doomed!

crab sticks actually contain no crab, and from 1992, manufacturers have been legally obliged to call them crab flavoured sticks.

Another one of those, same time tomorrow.

Mike Oldfields Tubular Bells, by popular myth, conatains over 1200 overdubs in some sections, this is false, although for his second album "Hergest Ridge" more than 90 seperate guitar overdubs were required to compose the thunderstorm section at the end of part 2.

This finale was then bastardised by Oldfield himself for the Quad mix of the album, and the original mix is only availible on the original vinyl pressings, all of which are of low quality for the dynamic range of the record because of the oil prices at the time of the records pressing.

Not so much a random fact as fan trivia, but i thought id post it.

Serendipity and Sri Lanka

The word "serendipity" was coined by Horace Walpole in the late 18th century. He based the word on the fortuitous discoveries made by the heroes of a fairy tale called "The Three Princes of Serendip". Serendip is a corruption of the Hindustan name for Ceylon, now Sri Lanka.

No country has ever won the Eurovision song contest being the second country to perform. In contrast, the artist singing second from last is most likely to win.

Sharks are also more likely to go for the one who's peeing.

The orange colouring in Irn Bru is a mild carcinogen.

The world's second largest tidal whirlpool, at almost a mile across, sits in the gulf of corryvreckan, near the isle of Jura in the inner hebrides.

Orkney's Ring of Brodgar is three times as large as Stonehenge.

In this very whirlpool Eric Arthur Blair a.k.a. George Orwell nearly drowned in 1945 when the motor of his dinghy broke down. The world came very close to never seeing 1984, it was only good fortune that saw Orwell and the children with him rescued.

Two of the E-numbers in Irn-bru as sold in the UK are illegal in Sweden and Norway; one of them is also illegal in the USA.

So, they claim, does Budweiser, but that may be an urban myth.

Bubble Wrap was created by accident by 2 men attempting to make plastic wallpaper with paper backing that could be easily cleaned.
