Postby NeilSJFC1884 on Wed Jul 27, 2005 10:10 pm

For those who dont know celtic where thumped 5-0 in europe tonight. A few folk ive spoken to have refered to it as an embarassment to scottish football. Or are we all like me, and are glad this insult to Scotland are struggling?

How the hell are they an insult to Scotland? Celtic alone? The Old Firm? Please elaborate.

Hmm lets see, they buy young scots and put them in the reserves then sell them on when they've lost all confidence in their ability and not fulfilled their potential (kenny miller being a good example). They fill their teams full of AVERAGE foreigners rather than playing these young scots, to the detriment of the scottish game. I'm not talking about the talented players like larsson who actually enhances the quality of our game, I'm talking about guys like hedman, capucho etc. And don't get me started on the ridiculous sectarianism issue.

This should produce excellent leverage against my weegie Celtic-Supporting flatmate. Marvellous.

Misunderstanding "speaking purely for myself", are we, Dave? And why 2003?

the insult to scotland isn't just the old firm, its the way our league is run - entirely biased towards the old firm. the fact that the spl voting system is that if there are 2 votes against a motion out of twelve then it is binned - thats justice for you!

Congratulations! You're repeating the same bullshit argument that someone has to wheel out every time someone mentions an old firm club.

Hedman had a track record to suggest he would be better than any scottish alternatives (Rab Douglas isn't exactly the safest pair of hands) and when a Scot did eventually come along (David Marshall) he couldn't get back into the team. The Old Firm do what every other club does... try to buy the best players. Because at the end of the day it doesn't matter where they come from, you need results. So many Scottish players are hyped up far too much after only a few games, so is it any surprise they never achieve their potential. Did you actually see Kenny Miller playing before he was sold or are you just repeating what you've heard elsewhere?

I don't see you complaining about Hearts signing various Eastern European players. Great job 'enhancing the quality of the game'.

And do you honestly believe that clubs sign foreign players with the aim of making their team worse?? Clearly not. They sign every player with the aim of making their team more competitive, but it can't be a surprise that more than a few of them fail. For every Capucho or Junhinho theres a Prso or a Petrov.

With regard to the original comment, it's probably down to a couple of things. Celtic haven't improved as a team over the summer, their defence has looked weak all pre-season, and they aren't match fit.

Oh no! A Scottish Football team lost a match and embarrased themselves... ...i see a pattern emerging... As indifferent as i also am to football, at least Celtic are good enough to get into Europe and win the rest of the time, which is more than can be said for the rest of the sorry excuses for clubs.

The problem with foreign players in this country is that far too many clubs have signed those of average/mediocre standards. As a Hearts fan myself, I don't think anyone can have a go at us for signing foreign players, as 4 of our line up are Scotland internationals, as we fielded all-Scottish XIs on more than one occasion last season, which is probably why we only finished 5th. Celtic's arrogance caught them out yesterday, they didn't respect their opposition and got duely hammered. The reaction from 'Ra best fans in ra wurld' has been hillarious, there have been fans returning their season tickets already. Celtic have overachieved in recent seasons because of O'Neill, particularly in Europe. No one, however, can excuse last night's result.

Sectarian issue? The club has done plenty to combat this- they've got a mission statement and say that anyone seen to be bigoted will be chucked out of the match/club etc.

I'm not sure if Rangers have come up with something similar now, but for a long time Celtic were the only ones to do this.

I was miffed that we got our asses kicked in that match, but it's not like it actually meant that much...it's ONLY a GAME! (someone should tell my season ticket holder cousin that--he used to cry when we lost and just go to bed!)

Should be noted that the voting system is now 8-4 majority needed to pass motions, the 11-1 majority was scrapped when the 10 non-Old Firm teams resigned from the SPL and then rejoined.

Agreed, however, the 11-1 system was ridiculous which allowed Rangers and Celtic to get between 80-90% of the TV Revenue between them each year, while the remaining 10 teams got between 10-20% split between them. I understand that most of the games involved either Celtic or Rangers, but of the 38+ games shown on BBC in those seasons, only 4 games were at either Ibrox or Celtic Park! In other words, they show the Old Firm away games, stopping some fans of the other 10 teams from going to the game in preference to watching it on TV, thus reducing revenue for these clubs whilst the Old Firm take the TV money.

It's a fairer system now, and hopefully it'll get better, but until then...we can just laugh at Celtic! (Notes that Hearts were the last remaining SPL team in Europe last season, and that Hibs and Aberdeen may be in Europe longer than Celtic this season.)

Well techinically they are, arent they? Time wise anyways. We could talk about the secterian issue allday, but we all know the old firm will never really strive to throw it out. Anybody whos seen the embarassing interviews with david murray, martin oneill etc, will know that we get the same answers- "we're doing this that.......the problem isnt that big". Yet still rangers play linfield (in northern ireland) in a preseason friendly, and celtic dont exactly discourage there irish and american-irish followers from embracing celtic as a cathloic club. It wont stop, a) in a generation thing and b) its too profitable.

Also the foriegners the old firm have brought in, with a few notable exceptions (laudrup, larsson etc), have been totally overhyped. Guys like petrov, prso etc usually dissapear in european nights.

No matter what the state of scottish football, the other clubs cannot take the blame. Celtic have the sixth highest wage bill in British football. Rangers are in the top twenty richest clubs in the world, Celtic the top ten (in terms of incomes). They have no excuses- they are underachievers. They're big enough to compete in europe. Perhaps they should take a look at themselves before blame the rest of scottish football.
