Are ghosts real?

Do you believe in ghosts?

Genuine, or mere photo manipulation?

Ghosts are about as real as the journalistic integrity of British tabloids.

I heard a story once that didn't convince me of the existence of ghosts, but made me think twice.

The electrician I work with once lived in a flat that was 'haunted'. One day his flatmates brought over the old Ouija (how do you spell that?) board and the ol' ghost talked to them. Of course, our electrician started cussing the ghost out and saying he'd kick his ass, etc.

From that night on he started having lucid nightmares of being thrown back and forth by these two men in a long dark corridor. He grew to fear sleep and the dark. He did what any God-fearing man would do in this situation: He called his mum.

She cussed him out to high-heavens, but then brought him this charm to leave by his bedside. He never had a problem since.

Ghost of placebo effect? The choice is yours...

I prefer to keep an open mind about about all aspects of the paranormal, there seems to be more evidence of the existence of ghosts than of their non-existence (I know this is flawed logic but what the hell!). It is interesting to note that the vast majority of cultures have evolved a belief in ghosts etc so does that suggest something?

Personally I think that ghosts are emotional imprints. If you look at accounts of ghosts, they are usually based around events of extreme emotion, murders, tragic deaths and also places where people have been extremely happy. We know so little about what the human brain is capable of so I think it is entirely possible that we can imprint our energy onto our surroundings.

I'll go hug a tree now...

What on earth are you talking about? If there are ghosts, by what means do you suppose they perambulate and execute actions, without a brain or a body? Or, if you take it that they lack agency and linger in one place like cannonsmoke, what allows the particles to hang together in the way that they do? Why would it just be human beings who left the faint trace ghosts are supposed to comprise; why not tables and chairs, cars and bikes, fish and chips?

When you listen to someone tell a ghost story, 'it's made it up' is *always* a more convincing explanation; if you see a photo in which an unaccounted-for human is present, 'they wandered into shot' or 'it's a hoax' are *always* more likely explanations than those that allow for the existence of ghosts, which hypothesis in this day an age makes absolutely no sense.

Come now. You're at university. Playtime is over.

I've seen and heard. And I'm not joking. The night before my grans funeral, i was sleeping in her house, and i heard her snoring, and heard her cough, she has this really weird cough.

Also, in the hospital, i saw a ghost- my great gran, carrying a bundle. 10 mins later, the nurse came in and said my gran was taking her last few breaths. Then she died. I believe the bundle was my gran.

Even talkin about that makes me have a shiver..im petrified of ghosts...they really scare me.

I love how the "we know so little" defence is so often used by people to try and substantiate mysterious occurances as supernatural.

Pretty much everytime a load of non-new age hippies go to a "haunted" locale, they basically find it's kind of chilly and dank because a bunch of hippies opened all the doors and didn't have money for the heating bill.

And people that say they're psychic - well, that's generally borderline schitzophrenia or attention seeking.

All the facts in this post can be scientifically proved by science.

Pinkymoo, I'm sure you earnestly believe you saw ghosts, but to extend my previous point a little: when you or I see a ghost, the more likely explanation is *always* that it was an hallucination, however authentic.

It's one thing to believe you saw something and another to actually see it.

To quote CSI or similar - witnesses are unreliable, only trust the evidence.

1% of Americans claim to have been abducted by aliens. That's over 2.5 million people. Just because a lot of people think something has happened to them, doesn't make it so.

Apparently 8/10 people have been abducted and don't even know it!?!?! But... how do they know 8/10 don't know if they didnt know to start with?!?! :s

I dunno if I believe in interactive ghosts/ poltergiests. Maybe in the energy of an event being imprinted on an area but to be honest it's more fun just to take things at face value without trying to unravel it all. I like keeping some mystery in my little world :)

Why do I have a feeling that this thread is going to degnerate into a lot of people saying "well I once thought I saw an indistinct blob on a dark night in the fog, so ghosts are real, so there" or "I once heard a noise in an old house when I was in an emotionally heightened state, so I know ghosts are real"?

The response to my post will likely be that science hasn't proven the non-existence of ghosts so we should all keep an open mind. Well, kids, science hasn't disproven the existence of unicorns either, because time hasn't been wasted on something that IS MADE UP!

Puh-lease.

Okay i know what you mean - and im not going to add to the "i heard a noise the night someone died" stories. (even though I have some of those stories)
But I DO believe in something else... as Lindsasy said.
What's wrong with believing in something inexplicable? I'm not trying to force my beliefs on anyone else, so why should it bother you if someone else chooses to believe in ghosts - or something else - some kind of energy?

I believe that after people die, they can choose to stay on earth as restless spirits, or they can choose to go on somewhere else.

Reading this does make me sound quite cookoo, i realise that.
