Fuel Protests

So who's now wondering how they will get up later this week? Are the pre-booked buses still running from edi airport? Personaly now packing with a view to geting the train and drag all my stuff up that way - even if it means walking from Leuchars. If it drags on longer than planned is it an acceptable reason to matriculate late?

I remember panicking about this five years ago...was just going into honours, although luckily it got resolved just in time.

If there's another fuel crisis, will the trains actually be able to run though? I have a vague memory of some of the GNERs being cancelled in 2000 - I'd investigated alternative transportation too!

I'm sure the uni wouldn't impose fines if you couldn't make matriculation - lots of you would be in the same situation - but let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Talk about deja vu...this happened just as I was coming to St Andrews for the first time in 2000, and it was this exact week- i.e- the week preceding freshers' week. BIZARRE.

Sorry, don't have any suggestions about alternative transport though! My mum was able to get fuel ok cos she worked for th eNHS at the time and those workers were allowed into the petrol stations. I don't know how it will all pan out this year, but hope everyone makes it up ok

Anyone else watching Newsnight? The fuel lobby man admitted to Paxman that fuel duties were lower now than in 2000 and that he didn't knwow what he wanted the government to do. He also revealed that his membership is a staggering 62 people, more than enough it seems to threaten to hold the entire country to ransom. Oh, to be allowed to round people up and shoot them. That said, I'd probably start with the vacillating spokesmuppet that the Government sent along, one of the most pathetic displays I've seen in a long time. Party line all the way, he can go home proud tonight.

How interesting, although hardly surprising. I noticed filling up for my trip up today that petrol stations were unusually busy, presumably people panic-buying the same way as last time. I do think that the government are likely to be considerably better prepared for protests this time and we're unlikely to see a rerun.

But then I have been known to be wrong.

That they allowed the last protest to go off was a real travesty - because clearly letting a bunch of angry white men have their 15 minutes of fame was far more important than the £1 billion it cost the country.

It's pretty hilarious that they've admitted they have no real idea and are simply lashing out at circumstances beyond their control. I they have to accept that finite supply + increasing demand = increasing price.

Besides, people should see this kind of event as a good incentive to move away from oil and all the negatives that it has and develop alternatives.

Just annoys me that Gordon Brown is asking OPEC to increase supply when there is a finite supply. And the amount of fuel duty and VAT on fuel is ridiculous, why dont they do it for aviation fuel?? Sorry, rant over

To state the obvious - with a few exceptions, no tax is designated for any particular purpose. It all goes into the same pot - hence rendering your statement either a failed joke or cretinous, though it's hard to say which.

While I was in the hairdressers today, bastion of journalistic integrity showed me that in fact we have the 2nd highest full tax (after Holland). We're something like 4% higher than 3rd place Germany (if we believe the Sun).

It was on Newsnight as well. US fuel duty 7%, France and Germany both in the 50s, UK 61%, Holland 62%.

Though as the man said, when you have a specific duty on fuel (or on alcohol), there should be no VAT on that, you're effectively taxing a tax. Either there's flat duties, or there's a system of tarriffs, not both.

Apparently one of the problems is (for us) the EU regulation. Basically, you can't just reduce tax on one thing, you have to cut it on a whole group of things.

Still, I think that it's pretty hypocritical for Gordon Brown to tell OPEC to increase production to lower costs, just so he can keep his tax revenues intact. As if it wasn't shameful enough when he cheated on his "golden rule".

So, I've been out of the country for a while and am therefore not totally up to date with all that's going on. I'll probably need to get petrol tomorrow sometime - you think everything'll be ok then? I know that there are protests but surely the effects won't be seen for a few days regarding petrol supplies? If I can't get petrol then I guess it'll have to be the train - presuming they're running. I remember the last time too, it was not good. Also, I'm pretty sure that in Belgium we pay more than here in UK - not sure if that's tax/duty or just the cost.
