British Test

Postby Webbie on Mon Oct 31, 2005 12:16 pm

Damn, only got 12 out of 15, obviously I'm not quite British enough.

Who'll be the first to get 15 I wonder

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4099770.stm

Edit: oh, yeah it is 14, not 15

Only saw 14 questions myself. I'd be surprised if most Brits could name all 4 saints let alone put them in order.

Its fucking stupid, what in the name of holy pissing christ does santa claus have to do with being British??!?!!
I wish to God whoever dreams this crap up would crawl back under their stinking rock and leave everyone alone. AFIAC part of being British is not conforming to some stereotype or being spoon-fed state-sanctioned approved citizenship nonesense; rather a freedom to express ones self, worship and live ones life as the individual sees fit.
Also, it claims that "british" electricity is 240V, when infact it fluctuates around 230V to bring us inline with the European market (who traditionally used 220V)

If the BNP ever get elected, the population of Britain would quickly drop to around 1.

HEre here Webbie, there is no such thing as a "race" of British people, being British is about being British, not about your ethnicity, homeland, how many generations your family has lived here etc.

Hmmm, seems i'm winning with my mighty 12, c'mon someone try and beat that!

PS It would be good if someone who may not fall into this so-called ethnic "british" race got the highest score

This test is rubbish.

Why no questions on British History?

We should copy the format of the American test.

Am I the only one that finds the idea a tad offensive?

I got an 8, how bad is that. And I didn't even fail on the Santa question, I think the stupid pub questions did it for me. Oh well, I am not British and have no intention of ever becoming it... especially not if they make me take a test like that!

i got 12, tho as many have stated, there were only 14 questions!

I'd halso been told Santa came from Lapland, and the only reason that i got the saints right was that i knew St Andrews day was the last of the four!

oh well, other one i got wrong was the divorce one

Happy to say I only got 10 right. And not only is it offensive in some respects but if the "test" reflects the direction Bliar is headed in then it is also pretty patronising to boot. Social life and knowing the quaint ways of the "British" (whover the hell they are) is one thing. But actually being furnished with useful knowledge is another and evidently, as the past 8 years has shown anyway, "dumbing down" seems to be the order of the day.

Incidentally "Santa Claus" and "Father Christmas" are two completely different guys. It's only one portion of the "British" population who seem unable to make the distinction. But, as with their confusion over the nature of "British", insist that there really isn't any difference and use the two terms seamlessly and without any acknowledgement that there might actually be any differences.

Before anyone gets too offended, remember that that isn't the real test. From the look of the home office website for it, its more likely questions about the running of the country etc. rather than where santa is from.

However, I don't really agree with the idea of a test (like that) for citizenship.

The real questions could involve:
"Where are Geordie, Cockney and Scouse dialects spoken?"
(source: http://www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk/htmlsite/self_50.html )
