my commiserations to you all.

i got a small part in one of those films, I slapped someone in Ottakars, much fun

I had mixed feelings about it - it was nice for our film to be shown but there were very few prizes (nothing compared to the $12,000 worth of stuff handed out at Berkeley in August) and it was disappointing to see such little variety in the top 15. There were three films in particular that were almost exactly the same - same music, shot in black and white, moody, pretentious, no particular story, featuring a girl who looked generally depressed - which probably stole time from some of the more interesting, if less well made films. I certainly didn't agree with the 2nd prize winner. Well made and well shot, but the editing was unengaging and made little sense.

The movies - well. I think when I tried describing them to people the next day, and got about 5 of them (the black and white, depressed, suicide/murder/drowning/pretentious death ones) all mixed up showed that it was very much along one theme. And while they were all well edited - having no speech makes editing much easier - they were all... meh. I'd have preferred to maybe have seen some that weren't as good, to have had a more mixed bag. Though there was one that was painful to watch - the one with really bad mouth-to-sound dubbing. That I could easily have done without. That and the one with Aristotle and the far too amusing sound at the end.

As for the presenting - only quibble really was when they came out to pick up the microphones and the feedback that ensued. To be fair, they probably got depressed by the doom and gloom of most of the films as well...

There was one with Aristotle? I don't remember that at all... Yeah, the presenting wasn't great. And what was the thing about the guy running in with a film at the last minute? Totally pointless and not even mildly amusing. Of the handful of non-moody, non-depressing, non-suicidal films, which caught your attention/at the very least, made you laugh? Also, do you really think the 'Innovation' Prize should have gone to a team simply for making more than one film? How does that constitute an innovation?

Yeah, I found it disappointing. I find it hard to appreciate depressing films and don't think they're really suited to a population of students who probably prefer random/funny/cynical stuff- I know I do. Fair enough having 1 or 2 depressing ones but they went overboard. Enjoyed some of the ones I saw after in the Union much more. Though well done to Team Procrastinators and the Lost the Plot group...those were the best things of the night!

In previous years, the event has been run in the summer. This year, the people from CMF who brought all the equipment over could only make it in November.

The cold weather and long nights probably account for the darkness of most of the films, but it was good to see a few happy ones in there too (of if not happy, then at least amusing).

The night was fun (perhaps more people should bring wine next time), and although the presenters' puns were awful, I think they did a pretty good job.

On the whole, the event was absolute garbage. Aside from the winner, and a few of the more light-hearted ones, the whole selection seemed to have been chosen by people who think they 'know' cinema. What the hell was the 'religious freedoms' film all about? Stick that evangelical nonsense where the sun don't shine please. Or the one about suicide? Fantastic, just what I want to watch on a Friday evening. The same soundtrack, filters and themes seemed to run through several films which made the whole night seem longer than it needed to be.

Thanks to the people who made the time traveling film, the christmas dinner murder thing and the egg/lamp stories. You guys seem to know how to make something fun/interesting/non-poncey, I tip my hat to you.

but was it really fair that one team had 2 films shown? I thought entering more than one film was kind of..well..er...cheating?

No, I enjoyed it for the most part. I definately agree about the depressing films and how there were too many. The winner was a deserved winner as I found it excellent, and they all were well made, just not...entertaining enough for my liking.

I would've loved to have seen some of those that were in the "highlights" and just had clips shown of them. Or some of the photos at the beginning looked really fun, but they weren't shown at the movienight. I bet the union showings were more fun.

Can I just point out that if people wanted to see more upbeat films, their team should have made a more upbeat film. Thing is, maybe these teams picked a simple topic and made sure to do a really good job on that simple topic (it's only 5 minutes, afterall) and that's why they got into the final. Besides, there were some happy ones- the egg idea was genious! and I do think that the winner was the best because if you really think about it, they edited it quite well, had a plot, had music, had edited-in breathing, had different camera angles (I know that sounds stupid, but real movies have different perspectives while amateur films tend to be shot the same way throughout the whole film, know what I mean?).

I mean, I was scared for that girl. --good sign that the film was good if you feel for the characters.

And I think the presenters' jokes were on par with the Emmy Awards, Golden Globes, or Academy Awards. Geesh, now Billy Crystal is bad.

Then again, I was laughing really hard during certain bits and turned to Oli, "Why are we the only ones laughing? Oh yeah, they didn't bring wine."

Ours was one of those - well, two related ones in fact - that had stills at the beginning and was in the highlights. Sadly, only one was shown at the union afterwards, as they lost the other one... Sodding typical luck!

If you question the abilities of people who had never made films before, you have a right to do so. Perhaps if you feel creative and know better, then next time try doing something yourself.
