Yes, let's not, and let's stop using a name neither you nor Potton ever knew me by!

It is the name by which we were told of you before we met you.

So if people had referred to me as "that wanker" (and some do) then that's what you would have called me having met me and been introduced to me?

Any news on who has been put forward, if anyone, to challenge Ming Campbell?

Yeah, I think one needs proper academic credentials to become chancellor...

And yet another pop from another unregistered user - lucky, lucky me.

And an unjustified one at that. Clearly you're someone who thinks he knows something about me, so hiding behind an unregistered name just marks you as feeble and spineless. If you have something to say about me, put your name to it.

At last, an interruption from the conversion of this thread into a pro/anti - Joss discussion. Insofar as I am aware, there hasn't been anyone else put forward.

I do hope you're wrong. Either way, one might have expected an announcement by now. That said, the University seem to have conducted the election, thus far, under a very strict "need-to-know" basis. And apparently no one needs to know.

It's been an annointing, and it's a disgrace. The announcement of Sir Kenneth's retirement at the end of December was made at a November meeting and members of the General Council were not informed and had simply to find out for themselves, and were then onlygiven until the 9th of this month to approach someone, discuss the matter and arrange a nomination - much of which over the holiday period please note. Strange how close to the announcement about Sir Kenneth Sir Menzies was in the press announcing his candidature. It's yet another stitch up and has been rushed through with unseemly haste. I bet the next step is to mail out ballots but allow only a few days to mail them back, just to make absolutely sure.

Disgusting.

If St Andrews was contested (dunno if it is, yet), it would be the first with easy means of mass messaging and communication - which would make it possible if anybody did have the inclination to campaign.

Easy mass messaging and communication? In what form? And how are we the first to have it (or am I just missing the obvious)?

I'm reading the lack of communication from the University about the close of nominations as meaning that there must have been several nominations. Were that the case, the regulations for the election stipulate that the candidates, their proposers and seconders are informed of the rest of the candidate pool. This is done in case one/more may wish to withdraw in the face of mighty opposition, unimpeachable respectability (think Prince Andrew), to save face or whatever.

I remain sure that we'll hear about what's up in the fullness of time. I'm doubly sure that my ballot paper, when and if one gets issued (remember that in this election there is no RON - so if there's just the one candidate, he's in for life no questions asked or election required) will be sent to America and arrive after the closing date for receipt of ballots...

I've only updated the Alumnus Office with my current address four times, so mine will likely be sent to my mother's house, despite my not having lived there in ten years.

It's funny, however, that FourteenTen, the Development Office's begging rag, manages to arrive perfectly each and every time it comes out...

Well, emails and the internet weren't really around in 1980.

I've never received a copy. There again, I've never donated to the University.

Nor have I!

Well, technically. They sent out this "Remembering St Andrews in your will" guide a few years back. There was a typo in the "cut and paste the following into your testament" section. I pointed it out and told them I'd saved them 250 quid in checking it over for them and that I'd be good for donations for a while.

My own favourite was when I got the begging letter just after I'd made a 'donation' of 3000 quid in tuition fees. Because it's that hard for the development office to check to seem if any alumni are still studying at the same institution...

So Ming was the sole nomination, and has been crowned Chancellor.

Quoting Tweedle-Dum from 01:59, 8th Jan 2006Mr Potton, are you thinking what I'm thinking: [Tobias] Joss for Chancellor?

I, for one, would rather be capped by Mr. Joss than Menzies flippin Campbell.
