Am taking a semester out, but am considering returning for may ball (as well as too see friends), is this worht it?

from what Ive heard this year will be. its always good fun though, not like anything else during the year!

basically the tickets are expensive and you have a 50:50 chance of having a good time. decide whether you think its worth it

Personally, I thought the may ball sucked big time, and would have still sucked almost as much even if it hadn't been so expensive. The problem was obviously in the planning for it.

Never been...not sure I ever will either. I think the top positives are:

1) You can say you went
2) Your seen going

Negatives:

1)It costs way tooo much
2)All the 'free' alchmoghol runs out within a couple of hours
3)All other alco runs dry a little after that
4)Food disappears before you find it
5)THE live act is on for a couple of songs after you've lost the will to live

All this info is direct quotes from friends.

Personally, I've spent my £100 towards a plane fare to somewhere exotic these last few years.

I thought it was infinitely better than the Opening Ball, but last year's definitely needed a better organisation. There's a reason bars aren't built in barns...

From what I've gathered it seems to rotate in a roughly one good year/one bad year format... how this can realistically be so is questionable.

However, I went in my first year and loved it. Bought the entry level tickets and had as much free alcohol as I could handle (no recollection of it running out, and I was drinking way into the early hours) plus they were giving triples at the bar to save queueing the (minimal) waiting time.

Plenty of food if you like the hot dog/burger fare and a decent music set (though I'd have more fun dancing at a typical bop than in full regalia at the ball).

A lot of how much one has depends on the crowd you go with, the weather etc. Ther first of which you can obviously control! I was gutted when the tickets were sold out last year within a few days (even more annoyed to discover that certain tradespeople within the town who had no connection to the ball or uni had been able to buy tickets!!!)

But yeh, I'd definitely recommend it, a great laugh. Yes the tickets aren't cheap, but I reckon I got a fair amount for my ticket price. Plus, don't part of the proceeds go to charity, with it being the "CHARITY May Ball" and all...?

You'll never know how much money from your ticket price goes to charity, as the KK don't disclose their accounts.

The thing is, you're not going because some of your money is going to charity, you're going to have a good time and get your money's worth.

Ask friends who went - you're more likely to get a balanced view of what it's like than you will on The Sinner.

Personally I had a great time last year, just beware of the mud (dont wear floor-length dresses) anyone who says the alcohol runs out are just basing it on rumours, i was drinking well into the night. The only annoying thing is the queues, so either get a 'fast-track ticket' or make sure you know the bouncers!

After chatting to a friend, I have heard that the format will be very different this year, with one main bar tent where the VIP room was last year. This means that there will therefore be no bars in the main venue. From what he has been saying it seems to be as if they are really putting an effort into it this year and I also heard that there would only be one ticket price but then again that was just a rumour.

When do we find out when the Acts will be published?

From the rumblings I hear from those involved in the ball there will be no tiers this year, and there will be many, many more bars. I think a VIP upgrade will be avaiable though for some.

So yes, the format will be very different with all the fun that has gone with previous balls. I've never had a really bad ball in St Andrews - they are what you make them. Mind you I thought the Ski Ball was was probably the worst I've been to recently and I left very early.

I went twice, 2004 & 2005, and had VIP tickets both times. 2004 was really good and definately worth the xtra money, as VIP tickets had a little side room which wasnt busy and had free cocktails all night.

However last year was shit, as they seemed to completely over sell ALL tickets. It took 45 minutes to get served in the VIP bar. I had one drink from there all night (and paid about £40 more for the privilage). In the end all bars were so busy that the KK had to start serving themselves, and yes the alcohol did run out for a while. They had to get some more form somewhere.

The KK members didnt really seem to care too much as they had their own little room. They only started helping out when people started getting really annoyed.

Oh and the other thing about the VIP tickets. Part of the deal was cars from the drinks at the castle to the ball. They did not have enough cars and after waiting about an hour most people just got taxis instead.

Basically i think they oversold the whole thing and didnt provide enough of anything i.e. bars, booze etc.

I think that the Mayball is definitely overhyped. I have been to two - they go on for too long and there are too many people there, the queues are too long. In st andrews a £100 should go a lot further than that.

The Mayball always costs more than the ticket price anyway - predrinks, drycleaning, taxis, etc

If you want to blow £100 in a fun way - I suggest you catch the train to edinburgh with some mates - go to a nice bar (i recommend tonic) follow up with the the opal lounge or poo naa naa - quaff some champagne or cocktails, then either head to the casino (to wait for the first train) or someones bed . No massive queues for the bar, no limits on what you can chose to drink, no revolting toilets outside and a far far nicer atmosphere.

I agree. They also forgot something just a teeny bit important- PLACES TO SIT! You cannot expect women to stand around in heels for 6 hours.
And the VIP food was gross, in my opinion.
