There is much talk of "if you don't like it, get involved".

Someone new to the Union has taken the iniative, become involved, and is now being criticised for doing so.

While I realise that these comments have come from different people, it's very much a case of "damned if you do; damned if you don't".

The elections are meant to be as democratic as possible, and we have a winner.
Let's not put Mr D'Ardenne down before he starts; give him chance to prove himself, and then make a decision once his term has been concluded.

Let's try to concentrate on the positives - Tom is relatively new to the Union. Perhaps this will bring a breath of fresh air and a new outlook. Perhaps he will bring new enthusiasm, and encourage even more people to get involved.

Grandpa, your complaint against the EOC does not stand up to scrutiny.

The EOC is accountable. All candidates have the right to appeal to the Chairman of the Students' Association, Ann Kettle, who has the final say on any decision made. In this case, she upheld an appeal against Tom's disqualification, and we all must accept this decision.

The EOC has worked extremely hard for the past fortnight, sometimes with members putting in excess of 12 hours a day, all voluntarily and with little thanks.

All decisions by the EOC were made very carefully, discussed at length, and made in good faith.

Do you mean to say that defeat hasn't been graciously conceded?

Considering he got his appeal upheld based on the fact that EOC "forgot to e-mail him" about a rule clarification that they said straight to his face, seeing as he broke every rule in the book?

I would imagine so... from someone in the know.

The union is meant to represent students, so who better than someone who is intelligent and knows about the students not someone whos necessarily been on the inside of the union for ages not doing much.

People want change...not just kicking a dead horse.

Three default hack sabbaticals to one non-hack would seem to suggest otherwise.

What does one do to qualify as a hack? Lee Kane, as ffar as I know, has been involved only this year, but seems to get repeatedly called a hack. I, on the other hand, have been working in the SRC since November, but don't seem to qualify for hackhood yet.

The word "hack" is bandied about too often, and people seem to use it in different ways. What did you mean?

While for DOSDA and DOES this will help, the positions of Pres and DOR dont need the same sort of knowledge of the union, they just need the motivation to help people and do the job in hand. I dont see how knowing how the union works will help the union President to a great extent!

Actually, I would say that the most important things for DoR are knowledge of Higher Education Policy, University Procedures and Processes, things like that. Just wanting to help people is nowhere near enough. There are many ways that this knowledge can be obtained, and being a "hack" is just one of them.
For President on the other hand, what is needed is a desire to communicate with the student body about what is happening.

Anyway well done Tom, all the best.

please don't say that lee kane and the other uncontested candidates were elected 'by default', if people didn't want them to be in the positions, they would have voted RON.

No, the majority of people do indeed vote in favour of a candidate by default, and not necessarily because they know they want that candidate. This is shown by the fact that our new Member for Absent Students was elected despite telling people to vote RON.

I don't want to detract from the efforts of the new sabbs, as it's not their fault, and I suspect they deserved to elected, but that's still the way it is.

I think the "hacks" as you people call them are being treated very unfairly on this thread. These people who constantly get involved in the union do so because they care and they want to make a difference, many of them also neglect their degree in order to stand up for what they believe in, it's not just for a gold star on their CV. But not many of you here don't seem to appreciate that and I just don't understand why.

My point is that it is a free and open election and anyone (including the Gatty cats) can run.

Well, not really. As cats, they're not matriculated students of the University.

But you're right in thinking that any student can run and should be encouraged to do so if they feel up for it. That's what elections are-- dediciding out of the people that want to do a job which one is the msot capable.

Tom d'Ardenne, a damn fine man

I like that!
Say it out loud. I'm going to send him random e-mails next year with just that in them. I'll find it hilarious (even though no one else will).

But be careful, not all hacks are inherently evil. If someone does their job and works hard-- then it's a darn good thing to have them as a "hack".
