Lloyds Pharmacy - empty shop unit

Postby Bread Roll on Mon Apr 17, 2006 10:57 pm

Now, I may be very much wrong here, but having done a smidge of research on the internet, I have discovered a planning application from Holland and Barrett for something or other in the shop unit that used to be Lloyds.

Which, if it means the imminent arrival of Holland and Barrett, would mean that there would be 3 such shops on Market Street - Julian Graves and the St Andrews Health Food Shop being the others.

I really hope I've my information muddled here and this doesn't mean we're getting a H&B. It's not that I'm against them, it's just that I'd rather see something we don't already have two of just across the street.

Does anyone know anything different about what the unit will become? I see its being fitted at the moment.

And as I was picking me teeth out of the gutter St Peter hisself appeared to me and said, "Sean, you wanker" he said.
"Repent yer evil ways or sod off". The he gobbed in me face and turned back into a lampost.

If that's the case, I feel rather sorry for the original St Andrew's Health Shop.

Health food shops replacing coffee shops as a ubiquitous presence in St Andrews would be rather amusing however.

It does seem a bit hypocritical of the council to let through national chains like H&B when they kicked up so much fuss (or so I've heard - entirely possible that I'm very mistaken) about Starbucks, reason being that it would put local shops out of business.

How on earth could the council let in ANOTHER health food shop on the same street? This lot want their head seeing to if that's the case. It's nuts. It does look suspiciously like a H&B setup inside though :oS

Bread Roll - the council didn't kick off over the Starbucks application. Actually they kept it very, very quiet.

Maybe if we got a McDo it would balance out the health-food shop frenzy on the other side of the street.

i doubt there'll ever be any big fast food chains in this town. i heard the guy that owns PM's is influential is always blocks any applications. just a rumour i heard a while back though and probably far from the truth.

Perhaps Julian Graves is owned by H&B.

I live for the day McDonalds is no more, and I hope this town is never darkened by it's shitty food.

As the Royal Burgh of St Andrews Comunity Council member who wrote on the aplication re Starbucks to Fife Council Planing committee. The grounds were not that they were a coffee shop, nor american, nor that there coffee is not to my taste but matters of signage, litter and retail space.

Just incase no one else can: I remember when we had a Wimpey in St Andrews.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the community council have no powers to block an application because of who the company is, what their business practices are or how multinationally global they are anyway. They are only concerned with "matters of signage, litter and retail space". Anyway, St Andrews is already chock full of national chains, I don't know who anyone is kidding that there is something special about it's shopping experience.

The bird with the thorn in its breast, it follows an immutable law. It is driven by it knows not what to impale itself, and die singing. At the very instant that the thorn enters there is no awareness in it of the dying to come; it simply sings and sings until there is not the life left to sing another note. But we, when we put the thorns in our breasts, we know. We know and still we do it. Still we do it.
