For goodness sake. Doctors sometimes get the diagnosis wrong. Its part of life and doesnt always indicate incompitance. Two doctors missed my appendicitis. I dont feel angry about it- I wasnt presenting in a typical way that appendicitis presents. If you see a patient early on in their illness it might not have developed fully and therefore the diagnosis might be wrong. You just have to go back as things get worse.

On the other hand, as I recall, doctors missed a ruptured appendix in the case of Brian Redhead (you remember, best-ever presenter of Today on Radio 4), diagnosed a gammy hip, and he died from the toxins that had leaked out of said appendix. So there are swings and roundabouts.

[rant}Hum, not certain that I would completely blame the government for this. Our Government spent a while where they gave people extra money if they went and studied medicine. And guess what happened here. A large propertion of the BRITISH students took the money, got their degree and promptly went private. Which meant that the government had spent money on them to no avail. The other side of the coin, which brings up the argument about immigration, was that most of the non-British students who recieved said monies went on into the NHS. So I for one am not so inclined to blame the government, but actually blame our society in that we are bringing up people who seem to have no morals about taking stuff and not putting something back.[/rant]

Emergency appointments at a GP surgery don't mean a DIRe emergency- if you were that bad you'd go to A&E. It does mean you have a troublesome complaint that needs to be seen that day.

If a Drs surgery is open for say, 9 hours a day (9-6), then they should be able to account for people who can't miss work. Why should you miss a tutorial? They should cater for you, and I have to say, they always did for me up there.

The original poster clearly cares about their work and doesn't want to miss a class in the run up to exams. There is nothing unreasonable about that. If anything the nurse/receptionist that dealt with the student was unreasonable. Tell the Dr next time you see them, and see what they reckon.

It doesn't work like that. In the surgery where I did my GP placement they had a number of emergency appointments set aside each day for patients and these appointments were at certain times e.g from 11am till 12am or in the afternoon. The majority of the doctors workload is seeing regular appointments and emergency appointments and home visits had to fit around them. So if you cant make the emergency appointment they might not be able to offer you one at your convienience becuase the doctors will be busy seeing other patients.

ok, ill admit, doctors are only human, they make mistakes, blah blah blah. thats true. what is also true is that its a common occurence of misdiagnosis. now forgive me for being pedantic, but they get paid a fucking fortune. if they are not sure, they should cover the bases. a simple look down my throat would have told said doctor what was wrong. thoroughness is not too much to ask, considering they allow ten minutes per patient. i know they have to be skeptical, but that also means checking the simple things. rebounding in the abdomen with intense or acute pain points towards appendicitis. a massive red lump on the inside of the throat indicates a problem. to label things as viruses seems an easy get out. however, that doesnt make me an ingrate mushroomgod, it makes me wary of the one doctor i've had bad experiences with. if you want to start a slagging match, bring it on, cos im more than happy to let rip, but i dont hide behind the sinner pages, i make it quite clear on various posts who i am, so if you want some, come fucking get some.
on a lighter note, i've heard dr. wills is a legend.
anyways, asked a receptionist the basis of appointments, and if you really have a problem, if you go in first thing in the morning, they will try and fit you in asap, but you might have to wait around. though to be fair, that happens a lot no matter which surgery you go to.

There was no guarding when I had appendicitis. It was only really confirmed when they took it out and it was only taken out as a sort of " we dont think you have it but we will take it out just to be on the safe side". But am shocked they didn't look down your throat when you presented with a sore throat. It takes all of 2 seconds to do and on my GP attachment they did it in all patients that came in with a sore throat even the ones that were blatently viral.

Have always found the people the health centre to be lovely and very helpful- yay Dr Russell! She rules.
