I second His Dark Materials.

I'm reading 100 Days of Solitude right now, and I like it but not as much as anything by Isabel Allende.

I'd also recommend:
Devil in the White City, by Erik Larson, about the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 (if you like history/architecture/thrillers).

The Quincunx by Someone or Other, which is a Wilkie Collins if Wilkie Collins were interesting.

I second 'The Time-traveller's Wife', that was a great read, though i felt so sad at the end

If anyone's into heroic fantasy, then David Gemmell's Drenai Tales are pretty good.

The Crow Road by Iain Banks - i've never really liked anything else of his as much but i really enjoyed this.

Umm...I also second the Hitch-hiker's Guide, Harry Potter, and His Dark Materials

Ooh! A Monkey!

Just wondering if you understood M&M...(?)...I have been trying to read this book for ages, but have kind of lost interest as I find it really hard to follow what's going on....

As for ideas, I'm a bit of a geek so read mainly factual books relating to the area of biology I'm interested in...which isn't balanced..I know!But in my opinion these books were worth a read:

- The Catcher in the Rye, J D Sallinger
- The life of Pi, Yann Martel
- The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Mark Haddon.
- The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown

There are lots of others...a lot of classics are fantastic!
