What do you think the name " Crystal"?

Postby ala on Sun May 14, 2006 2:23 pm

I have a non-native english speaker friend who wants a english name.
She wants our opinions of the name "Crystal".

So, what do you feel about this name?

In my opinion, it sounds too hard :)

i think of Crystal Palace, the best football team in the land.

as for the name, it sucks. sounds like your a wannabe celebrity child.

if her english is really bad, tell her that 'Iloveanalsex' is a good traditional name.

I think it is a bit tacky...makes me cringe when I hear it!

Sorry to any 'Crystals' reading this - no reflection on the person behind the name....

yeah, I told her your suggestion. it seems her english is good enough to understand the traditional name "Iloveanalsex".
so, if it's traditional, is that what you call youself?

If she wants an English name, she could find out the meaning of her own name then find an English equivalent, so it'd still be personal.

All in all, I'd say I prefer electrons to people.

Crystal is becoming a more and more common name, so it's not going to stick out like a sore thumb. However, a lot of people will perceive it as tacky.

The problem is that her own name doesn't have any meaning in English.

What's wrong with her real name? Is it just really hard to pronounce/spell? Cos Brittish names are hardly blameless in that regard. My sister is call Seonaid, and my uncle, Donaidh. Guess how they're pronounced. The joys of a highland ancestry.

Her name may not have any meaning in english but it must have some kind of meaning in her own language? And if she finds out what that is, then she can find an English name which has a similar meaning.

Wen-Wen?

I prefer unusual names. In my year at school, of about 90, there were 4 boys called Chris and 5 girls called Claire. I liked knowing it was me who was being addressed when I heard my name.

Pedantic edit: remembered two of the Claires were in the year below me, but were in my higher art class when I was in 6th year. Don't you feel better knowing that?

From an Irish standpoint, Shauna, or Shona if there's a fada on the o (do you have fadas in Gaelic?). Donnie or Do-nee, similarly.

You win a gold star. Shona and Donnie/Donald respectively.
