For all you Closet Politicians:

Presenting the Political Compass. Answer a few questions about morality, government and religion, and find out how you rate on the political compass!

From the website:
"There's abundant evidence for the need of it. The old one-dimensional categories of 'right' and 'left', established for the seating arrangement of the French National Assembly of 1789, are overly simplistic for today's complex political landscape. For example, who are the 'conservatives' in today's Russia? Are they the unreconstructed Stalinists, or the reformers who have adopted the right-wing views of conservatives like Margaret Thatcher?

On the standard left-right scale, how do you distinguish leftists like Stalin and Gandhi? It's not sufficient to say that Stalin was simply more left than Gandhi. There are fundamental political differences between them that the old categories on their own can't explain. Similarly, we generally describe social reactionaries as 'right-wingers', yet that leaves left-wing reactionaries like Robert Mugabe and Pol Pot off the hook.

That's about as much as we should tell you for now. After you've responded to the following propositions during the next 3-5 minutes, all will be explained. In each instance, you're asked to choose the response that best describes your feeling: Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree or Strongly Agree. At the end of the test, you'll be given the compass, with your own special position on it."

Enjoy, and discuss.

Edit: Oh, and me...

That even surprised me. Does that makes me a libertarian socialist? Or an anarcho-syndicalist? I like the sound of that.

Hmm, interesting, apparently I'm bang in the centre:

Economic Left/Right: 0.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.21

I would have thought of myself as being a bit further to the right personally.

I am suspicious of this test, and from question one to boot:
"If economic globalisation is inevitable, it should primarily serve humanity rather than the interests of trans-national corporations."

I mean, come on. Slanted? Skewed? Not even the half of it. Who is going to be "against" humanity?

as to question three:
"No one chooses his or her country of birth, so it's foolish to be proud of it."
It's just a weird question, given immigration and everything. It's like saying "it's foolish to be proud of your family (relatives by marriage included) because you were born into it"

They really need a neutral answer. I take it back; I did go through with the test, but it only confirmed my belief that it is useless. Another example of a bad question:
"Abstract art that doesn't represent anything shouldn't be considered art at all."
I mean, what do they mean by represent? Abstract art DOES represent things. it just doesn't depict them. So, if I accidentally spilled a can of paint on a canvas, it's not art because i was not representing anything at all, because it was random, there was no intent. SO how does one answer this question?

Hummm, about where I expected. It appears that I can put myself on comparison with Mandela and Gandhi. Now there's something to behold.

The little red dot on the graph that represents your views is almost exactly on the centre for me. Apparently I'm as 'middle ground' as they come. Although I would take issue with some of the questions in the test. There were a few which for me didn't have a simple yes or no answer, yet you essentially had to pick one or the other.

Hmm, I seem to have drifted back leftwards since the last time I took the test. I guess moving to Glasgow can do that to a guy.

Hang on,
Tony Blair is further to the right than Ariel Sharon?
Agree that the way the test is worded makes it seem as if they looking for answers. The scores (a lot of them a long way left and libretarian) seem to reflect this. (By a long way I mean further than Stalin FFS)

I frankly disagree. I'm further right than that. I'd have expected roughly the same number, without the '-'.
