Khatami lecture - such bollocks

Postby Dave the Explosive Newt on Tue Oct 31, 2006 6:18 pm

I've just got back - only about a third of the people there were given translation headsets, the rest of us had to make do with handouts of the transcript of the lecture. I dropped mine down the back of the seat infront of me after I'd read it through once so that was me fucked. The extra special irony here is that it was a lecture about communicating - and every gesture and intonation the man made was lost when the lecture was committed to text.

I was on the other hand very pleased to hear the account of his life from the professor nominating him and being present for the degreee itself being conferred was an honour (although I note Khatami did not bow to Lang - yes, Ming dropped out) but, really University of St Andrews, try harder on the organisation front next time.

I couldn't agree more: If I wanted to read his speech, I would have looked for a transcript tomorrow and not gone.

Do you suppose Khatami's decision not to bow to Lang was purposeful, or a misunderstanding of our tradition?

I also found it very humourous that no one knew the words to the Gaudeamus (myself included after the first verse). Made for a gripping rendition.

Edit II: Well played to the 10 protesters who turned out (not one from/for the NUS). Way to be, guys. Way to be.

Perhaps it was a comment on Lang's own misunderstanding of our traditions.

Does anyone else find it highly amusing that The Saint has pulled off a journalistic coup?

Does anyone find it even more amusing that the bottom of this article, which is an official university press release, links to the Saint website which hasn't been updated for over two and a half years?!

edit. just re-read the article and it mentioned "all the gowns and mortar boards". Some poetic licence on the mortar boards on the BBC's part there?

From the BBC news website:

"... a dozen or so protesters penned behind metal barriers held up placards denouncing the event. "Shame on St Andrews for inviting a terrorist," read one."

I find this comment utterly unacceptable, and even embarrassing. Misinformed, naive, ignorant and aggressive. It is pillocks like this who are making serious religious dialogue that little bit harder.

Were these protesters even students? Do you recognise this man?

Not only the BBC. The Scotsman describes the Association President as wearing "his ancient robes and white tie". Ancient robes? Hardly.

Do the pictures mislead? Or did HE decline to wear the cassock? Also, could he not have knelt a smidge closer to Brian, he's in danger of toppling over trying to cap him.

I walked up North Street after my tutorial ended, to see the protests, and I was very disappointed. I wasn't hoping for mass riots, but after all the build up, it is a shame the NUS and just about everyone else who jumped on the Khatami hating bandwagon were all cock but no balls.

He just wore his cleric's robes - and he didn't kneel at all, only bowed slightly.

Are you referring to the protesters or the report itself? Because I counted 10 protesters, and one man repeatedly saying "Shame on University of Andrew for inviting a terrorist".

Tut. Now, that is something of which we do not approve, and about which there should be protest!

This sort of scenario was where Sir Kenneth was at his most masterfully clever and slightly devious. In another ludicrously over-hyped honorary degree ceremony of recent memory, the honorand was of the inclination not to kneel; Sir Kenneth had to indicate sotto voce that if he didn't kneel, he wouldn't be able to reach him and, lo, he assumed the proper position and protocol was maintained.

That said, allowances have been made in the past on the kneeling front; one of the Nobel Prize winners that was honored last summer was too frail to kneel and got capped upright, for example.
