Who actually elected Rob Fett?

No one.

The man who is held up as a shining example of Association initiative was never voted to his position.

It's always been the way that co-opted members were run at the next available election.

SRC Member for Library and Learning Resources - Vacant.

I just want to know why they are closing at 10 these days and wonder whether the library going back to midnight opening is a case of the right number of staff rather than someone with a magic library wand making it so. Clarification?

Library and Learning Resources is always run in march. It's quite arguable that "the next available election" means the next time it comes up - i.e. March.

Hmmm. Surely the phrase "next available election" would indicate the next available election and not, in fact, the one after the next available election. Of course, the whole idea of allowing people to be co-opted to the SRC is a remarkably strange one.

Does all that matter, as long as stuff gets done, and gets done well?

Yes, ultimately. But not as much as if stuff didn't get done, or got done badly.

But it says on the Library News page that the early closure was due to a staffing problem that would be sorted by the end of October. It's not as if Rob did anything to help this, it was something the library was sorting out all along.

Don't get me wrong, I think the later opening hours are a boon for both students and staff, but does the same not apply to the later opening hours?

PGs in my department have been interviewing for the night attendant jobs and from what I hear this has been on the Library's agenda for some time...

"From what you hear"? LOL you know very well it has been on the agenda for a year and an half at least now, because it was one of the first things that was raised as both an UG and a PG issue in the very first Student Library Users' Group meeting that we were both at.

Actually, now that we have a fully functioning website, I will get Oli or Royce to give me editting rights over the Education section and create a page dedicated to Library news and put up all the minutes from the previous meetings of SLUG (bless Sabrina!) for people to read.

I try and block out those memories; of course, the same excuses that they were peddling back then for inaction over certain issues can be found summarized by Mr Fett here: Main/thesinner/25889. That brought it all flooding back.

Brilliant. I don't care how it came about or who'se responsable. I'm just glad that they've finally decided to stop banishing us all from the library at Quater-to-ten.

What errant twaddle. In the first place, Library and Learning Resources hasn't existed for long enough to "always" be anything. Second, unfilled posts and casual vacancies are filled at by-elections or at the next diet - not held over until the main diet. I'd expect the Chair to know that.

Students' Association Laws Chapter 6

-----
1) The SRC shall have the power to co-opt the following:

[...]

SRC Member for Library and Learning Resources

[...]

if:

a) insufficient nominations are received in the annual elections,
b) to fill the above vacancies, if caused by the resignation of the member, for the unexpired period of the term of office.
-----

While point b is dealing with resignations, it is unclear whether the line "for the unexpired period of the term of office" refers to just point b or to both points a and b, therefore, it was decided to take that line as refering to both as either it does or it provides a guildeline which can be applied to both.

To avoid future confusion the matter with be brought before SRC and SSC at the next meeting.

Plus, I don't think that Rob is saying that he personally has made the library open until 12midnight, but rather that he is informing you of the progress, as I know some people contacted him to ask about it.
