Probably just as well.

And there we go again with the editing so my next post makes less sense. Maybe if you would post with less idiocy I would post with less vehemence, what do you think?

Well, it's your own stupid fault if you seem to know that I like to edit my posts really. What it seems as if you should do is leave it a few minutes longer than your last (which was 2 mins after my post).

That would be reasonable, i think.

Actually, the what I really think might be considered too rude, so you could just foxtrot oscar instead.

You really are charming. Too bad I missed whatever you deleted, I'm sure it demonstrated your maturity and eloquence in high style.

[...] you DID sign the sponsio, if you felt you could not avoid bringing the University into disrepute or you felt you were so important that it should not apply to you, you had the chance to say so.

I'd be keen to read the text of the sponsio, as I have heard it mentioned a few times on this board. If anyone has a copy that they could put up here (or alternatively provide a link to), I'd be most obliged.

If it is, I can't find it.

Here - courtesy of Dr Covino posting it elsewhere on The Sinner - is the text of the Sponsio Academica and translation:

"We students who set down our names hereunder in all good faith make a solemn promise that we shall show due deference to our teachers in all matters relating to order and good conduct; that we shall be subject to the authority of the Senatus Academicus and shall, whatever be the position we attain hereafter, promote, so far as lies in our power, the profit and the interest of our University of St Andrews. Further, we recognize that, if any of us conducts themselves in an unbecoming or disorderly manner or shows insufficient diligence in their studies and, though admonished, does not improve, it is within the power of the Senatus Academicus to inflict on such students a fitting penalty or even expel them from the University."

A bit off topic and not sure if it has been pointed out already (may have been even though it would probably have little affect) but this week, Monday 13th - Sunday 19th November is in fact National Drink Safely Week.

Probably not the best week for that campaign in St Andrews

I am ashamed to say I do not know the Gaudeamus. I don't know the tune - I think there should be a compulsory learning of it at the start of first year just like my school made me learn the school prayer.

I don't recall signing that. In any event, why should the university be held responsible for the actions of independant free-thinking (*Snigger) adults?

To be honest, this whole thing has been blown out of all proportion. I'm under no false illusions that rasin weekend is an innocent event. But to drag half of fife constabulary to St. Andrews for the night is a total waste of police resources.

How much actual drink related crime is committed in St. Andrews? I'm not talking about local grievances of students being loud and irritating and generally existing at 1am. I'm talking fights, theft, vandalism here. Proportionally very little I'd expect!
My home town is less than a quarter of the size of St. Andrews, and yet on a friday and saturday night we have binge drinking, fighting on the town square, pubs packed to the seams with under-aged kids (Well, not so much anymore), and maybe two police cars to keep it all under control!

Rasin weekend will come and go whether there's a policeman for every five students or not. Waste Of Time, Waste Of Money!

Students found with Raisin Receipts will be asked to provide evidence of its ownership. If this cannot be produced, the Police will be charging the student with theft.

If the student is an academic “child” then, even if gifted the receipt, they will be charged with “Reset”.

The Police will be in attendance on the Monday to test all receipts.
So the University, in its infinite wisdom, has somehow managed to change the law by making it now guilty until proven innocent? If the Police do arrest and charge you with theft then they will have to prove that you stole it. You don't have to prove shit.

Raisin Weekend poses a number of behavioural problems. It is a pre-existing problem and one that the police are aware of. To not attempt to tackle it would be negligent.

As for the Latin, I used pig latin, like Computicarium Studium and Modernicus Linguis

Raisin Weekend: The best time of year to make friends with your local Classicist.

The upset with Raisin Weekend is less the behavioural problem and more the medical problem. You will doubtless be / have been told that not so many Raisin Weekends ago, every ambulance in Fife was ferrying students to Ninewells, which is clearly unacceptable. Since then, things have improved. It is not an innocuous event, predictably preceeded by scaremongering and stories of the Bad Ol' Days, but doesn't warrant the scare-stories perpetrated at the start of this thread.

That said, what wasn't originally revealed is that the e-mail was written by a hall's Senior Student, which is not the same as something coming from University admin. With respect to the individual concerned, but perhaps they should have thought a bit more about the accuracy and implications of what they were saying.
...but then again, that is only my opinion.

Because we are a society so dulled by paternalistic legalism and tyrranous republicanism that we allow fascism to sneak slowly up on us and give us a right royal rogering up the arse?

Surely you mean authoritarianism, not fascism. If you don't, I'd go revise your understanding of what fascism entails.

Might want to look up republicanism while you're at it...

I'm not entirely sure it's fair to blame the senior student: A very similar, if not exactly the same, e-mail has also been sent around by AU club captains, signed by Chris Lusk.

Does anyone think, in light of this email, that Raisin weekend may be in jeopardy? It would be really, really sad if it came to an end.

Sorry for the double post but...

At the "talk" for DRA we were told (by a polieman and by people from the university - the exact names escape me) that if this Raisin Weekend is as bad as last years then this will be the last year it will happen.

Apparently the Uni will refuse to let us use the Quad or any other University property on the Monday and the police will definitely not allow us to have it in the street so that will be the end of the foam fight at least.
