According to the two police officers I spoke to in the Union tonight, the University is NOT speaking on behalf of the police in the emails they're sending round. The police have had a very realxed briefing on it, and will not be "clamping down" any more than they would do on a Friday night.

Edit: inshaala, the senior student was merely passing on information obtained from the University. It was not his own words, I think he made that reasonably clear at the start. Before you start waffling on about GCSE history, please save yourself embarassment by reading the information given to you.

Exactly, it's scaremongering. It would hurt and underminne the University authorities' popularity too much to ban Raisin Weekend outright, so they threaten it instead.

Although the police presence was noticeably increased on Raisin Sunday last year, they weren't any more aggressive in arresting people than they normally are. Other than the chickens incident, which apparently shocked the officers involved, I don't think it was terribly eventful for the police.

Precisely. The officers I spoke to were, in fact, looking forward to working for it. From people I've spoken to around town these last few days (shopkeepers, taxi drivers, general locals) raisin weekend is as much a tradition for the town as it is for the students - they almost expect to see us out in full force, having a good laugh, a good drink, and being young.

As for the blatant lies and threats, I think I'm going to reply to the Principal's email now.

incompetence at spelling "below"

A quotation that will serve as a warning for and highlighting of the major fault of every authorotative source that's ever existed and ever will exist.

Beware the incompetence at spelling "below" and shudder.

No, no, no. Your point does not stand. It never did. You made a big fuss about the senior student 'signing' the email, and you feel that it being signed by a student questions the authority of the thing. This implies that you think that he wrote it. No, as I said, he was passing on information. I would hazard an educated guess that he copied and pasted from something he received. Think outside the box.

From the email:

Cheers
Iain
Senior Student

So you all just had a massive debate over the threatened action of police over an email which wasn't sent to all students, nor (from what i can tell) was from an official source, signed by one "Iain, Senior Student". Did history lessons at GCSE not teach anyone anything? Question your sources in the first instance, because unless i am so ignorant to University hierarchy "Senior Student" isnt a position of authority i am aware of...

[hr]

Ich will dass ihr mich versteht

GCSE history... Ah I remember that one! where they taught you that present day academic historians couldn't possibly be reliable sources because they weren't there at the time and write from a third person perspective!

The thread was started off by that email, but we're not just discussing its content. We're discussing the attitude of the powers that be about last years events, and whether or not this years response is measured and proportional. Whether or not the Email is written from a position of authority, it contains information that we can confirm from other sources. The raisin weekend talks in hall have made similar statements about behavioural problems, and the email from the principle last week, stating that last year was the "Worst in living memory" backs its contents up to an extent.

Yet you all still persist in beleiving it is comes from an authoritative source...

Dom: I know he probably got it from somewhere else, why didnt he say where? What is to say he didnt just make it up that "text bellow"... what if someone else passed it on to him as a joke to wind him up because he might have had plans... there is nothing in any evidence presented here which backs up what was said in that email as being from a good source. The other sources you mentioned jono, who or what were they and what did they say, because i doubt any of them stated that police would be searching and arresting people based on non-proof of ownership of raisin receipts. Show me a police statement to that effect and i will retract my statement, but until that is the case my point well and truely stands - you all just had an arguement about the legality of stop and search and arrests based on a loose definition of a "source".

I think i am the only one thinking outside the box here dom.

Question the question, answer the question, question the answer.

Just as an aside, he's not Prof. Lang. He does not hold, nor has he ever held, a chair. So it's Dr Lang, or Principal Lang.

Right, I'm going to put a stop to this silly argument once and for all. I have just showed this thread to Iain (who wrote the original email) and he confirmed that it was sent to him from the university. I think that me made it pretty clear that he didn't write the email, and the fact that everyone but inshaala realised this suggests that she is a little bit stupid.

Anyway, I can confirm that it was from an authoritative source so you can stop causing trouble now inshaala.

And by the way, don't bother correcting any spelling mistakes because I don't give a fuck.

No chance of you dismounting that high horse of yours then?

(The question is, are you riding straddled, or side-saddle?)

So; The mums parties are over, and the dads have begun. Any indication of 1-Upmanship from last year so far?
