G.A.Y Bop this weekend....

This message board is for discussing anything in any way remotely connected with St Andrews, the University or just anything you want. Welcome!

Actually, sorry to be pernickity, but the night was hosted by SVS not LGBTsoc, as a charity fundraiser and an awareness night. I think it was really effective as well, though someone from SVS can give you more details on the night's success.

Sorry, i guess i didn't phrase that well. I know it was organised by SVS (i volunteer through them) but i wasn't talking specifically there.

My post was aimed at the unreg who was talking about students who wouldn't want the union to endorse homosexuality. As an affiliated society, if LGBT soc could justify the use of venue 1 for an event, no one in the union's gonna turn around and say 'well, what about those who don't approve of people being gay?', are they?

And yes, what i meant was 'music and dance routine' rather than the same old music. Although since it was cheesy, dancy music, it wasn't terribly different from the usual bop.

And i can't help but giggle at the idea of a non-secular bop - maybe we could all stop for a few minute's silence to pray in the middle of it :-P

Teagreenaddict - i really don't think you know the meaning of the word you're using. If you question the notion of events being secularized then maybe you should find another country to live in, considering we're one of the most secular countries in world.

I had to pause and giggle at the thought of the pope getting down to the scissor sisters. But hey I've known a few priests that would probs have a great time at the bop G.A.Y or otherwise.

i didnt say i was consistant, just right!

I apologise - bad habit of picking up words from reading, and misusing them, which I thought I'd left behind! By 'secularise' I meant divisive.

Fair enough - still don't see it as divisive though. It was a style of dance night, and as someone has pointed out above there have been many different styles of night held in the Union, some you'll want to go to some you won't. I fail to see why this one is more divisive...

Yes, bitmap file supporters really should post anonymously, wretched things.

Sorry, I couldn't resist

Sorry, even though things on this thread seem to be coming together now, I just wanted to tell a little story.

A national newspaper accused the Union and those who work for student activities-- i.e. me-- of discriminating against homosexual students.

A friend of mine who had nothing to do with the Union read this and yelled to me, "Bonnie, just look at who volunteers with you for the Union. Just look at the people in the bop on a Friday night. The Union couldn't GET more GAY."

So true.

Apologies to the three straight men in St Andrews. Actually, no apologies are needed-- you're too busy taking advantage of this fact.

haha, troll detected. Only holocaust deniers/bmp supporters and others of that ilk would feel the need to post anonymously.

Unless your position is similarly one of bigotry and intolerance of course.

Not really. It is possible for a straight person to not want to go to a gay bop because, well, it's a gay bop.

Do not confuse distaste for bigotry. People can dislike something, someone, or some segment of society without being Nick Griffin; however, when Union funds start getting used to put on events which then make said people feel uncomfortable, we have a right to speak out without being called "bigots;" nobody called Mohawk a bigot when he said that 'christian' and 'normal' were contradictions. 'Mohawk, you are a bigot.' I could reasonably say that by Senethro's standards. But those are double-standards, aren't they Senethro?

All I'm saying, people, is that in spite of what 'Bonnie' thinks, most people at this university are straight and they feel kind of uncomfortable, or simply put off, by a gay bop. How much money did it earn exactly?
