Not a bad night. I was only there for like two hours, but i still managed to have a decent time.

Ironic in some ways really. Kerrang gets slated as the evil metal murdering spotty teenager magazine, and yet it's the songs that appear regularly on its playlist that seem to get the biggest response from the crowd.

Oh it doesn't wind me up in the slightest! I don't see why a paticular song or artist should be demonised just because it gets played on Kerrang as if it somehow becomes unworthy of play the minute it gets some television coverage.

Dude my favourite bands are Nine Inch Nails, Slipknot, Primus, Faith No More, Marilyn Manson, Pink Floyd, Maiden, Cradle Of Filth, Mastodon and Devin Townsend. I sure hate the popular stuff.

The bands in Kerrang don't suck- the magazine itself does! I suspect because it just hangs on to the tails of whatever's popular, so it's no surprise the stuff people like end up in Kerrang. I would not mistake Kerrang for a trend-setter, so much as a cheap cash-in on others' success.

Could just be 'cause I read one issue and just thought ""man, this is awful..."

No Kerrang does suck. I have maintained this belief for a while. I only used to buy it for the letters page and Pandora, but even that isn't good enough any more. Classic Rock is starting to suck balls as well. I say starting, it has for a while.

I think it's metal Hammer, but whatever mag has "ask Jurgen" is pretty decent.

Isn't it great? You ask for more rock, you get slated. You try to enjoy what's being played, you get slated some more... Though I guess if I hadn't been up for the heavier stuff you'd have a valid point.

You just define "not getting it" don't you mate. I'll lend you a hand this time: You're not being slated for either of those things. You're being slated for being hypocritical. If people complain about there not being "real rock/metal/punk" or whatever played, but then leap to their feet when a pop song is stuck on, essentially saying "actually what I said earlier was bolloks, I just meant play what I know and like" then yeah people are going to get irritated. What are we meant to to do, send round a list of bands to everyone to check we're not offending anyone's tired little genre definitions?

Cos you know kicking up a fuss because one brand/band/song of pop rock is played, then dancing like a loon when one you consider a classic is, is irritating. So yeah, it's 5 am but I think you get the picture. If not I'll clarify after sleep.

I guess I do qualify as 'not getting it', but so do you. I was more than happy with said rocksoc, as a healthy mixture of just about everything was played. I did NOT say "Only play heavy rock", I said "play more"- a request which was answered. It doesn't mean I only like the heavy stuff, just thought it was under-represented. And for the record, I'd be up there if Linkin' Park or Greenday were played, too.

I'll let you in on a secret actually. We didn't answer your request. We've just kept doing things as we always have. People make the same half arsed complaints every year, albeit about different genres.

"More punk!"
"more popular stuff"
"more obscure stuff"
"more metal"
"less metal"
"stuff I can dance to"
"stuff I like"

We can't please everyone so we just do what we think is best. If it's not, well next year there's a different commitee.

Basically what I'm saying is stop your fucking bleating.

What pisses me off more are the complainers that you tell to just shut the fuck up and enjoy it and then they go "Do you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to be a big man, shut the fuck up and enjoy it. YOU ARE ALL MY PEOPLE! PEACE OUT MAN!" like it was their fucking idea in the first place.

Wanks.

I'd like to get in on the ground floor of this little tiff as I've had experiance with arguing with Captain Rimjob myself :D

Firstly, this is a stupid re-occuring mindless timeless argument that will never be settled.

Jez is right. You can never appease EVERYONE because rock covers so many genres/songs/scences/trends etc. So from time to time a trend of punk or emo will be played and the metallers will get pissed off. Then there'll be nothing but metal played and it'll piss off the goffs. And so on.

So RockSoc does "the best they can" with a selection of DJs picked to cover as broader span of tastes as is possible.

Anyway this is nothing new. But neither is Jez's tendancy to bite the fucking head off of anything who dares to cross his opinion. So no wonder Marek is feeling a little cornered here. Jez...mate...pal...homoerotic bumchum...back off. Marek's complimenting a good night. Let's take that, raise some Jaig and let the streets ring with shouts of "FUCK YEAH!".

Stupid fucking sinner. Right in the interest of laziness and brevity here, in note form, is what I typed:

1) Didn't know thread starter was Marek. Don't care.

2) It is hypocritical and elitist to bollok the DJs and commitee for playing pop rock and to then dance like a loon to the "right" kind of pop rock. End. Of.

3) I'm glad everyone had a good time.

4) I like inflamatory language and swearing. Look at the picture, not the frame.

5) 3 or 4 DJs are on the way out. Next semester - X FACTOR STYLE DJ AUDITIONS. Maybe. Anyway insted of the old run around, why not submit a DJ audition cd? If we gave you a cd length set, what would you play?

6) How shall we choose the new DJs? My idea right now is, after I have enough CDs, to have a listening party at mine or somewhere on a non-rocksoc week. Want to vote? Come along.

Fairs dos.

I like the idea of X-factor style auditions.

A CD's length of set sounds reasonable but isn't that 20 odd songs? Sounds like if lots of wannabe DJs turned up there wouldn't be enough time/interest!

I say the ye olde tradish of throwing sample CDs at a commitee member and seeing if they approve.

No mish...no mash.

Plenty of smash. Um, yeah.

Well we don't normally get that many CDs. And we have to listen to them, but if the listening sessions are open at least people can't complain. They don't HAVE to come.
