Yes! I don't understand...

Also, I arrived at my polling place, not being able to find my card quickly enough, and got my ballot just by saying my name and address. No form of identification required whatsoever! Now if that kind of system doesn't just scream for abuse...

Anyone know why we voted in pencil? I asked the woman at the polling station and she just said it'd always been that way. Isn't this the kind of thing you should absolutely use pen for?

Still, its good to see the Lib Dems and Tories get an absolute beating for being political non-entities, its just a shame so many thousands wasted their votes by going for them!

And you'd rather we had a 2 party system then?

The Conservatives are proving that they're a force in England, if not up here at least, unlike the LibDems, who seem to be losing across the board. Sir Ming is just too old and dull, I suspect.

I worked as a poll clerk in the european elections a few years back and yes, all you have ever needed is your name and address. You can't use a poll card as a valid form of ID, because it could easily be stolen during posting and used by someone else. You also can't ask people to provide any other type of ID, because some people won't have any - and you can't disenfranchise people for not having passports or new driver's licences. Basically the whole system is based on the idea that almost everyone will vote - your name is crossed off a list so that if you turn up and someone else has already voted using your name, it can be investigated.
However in a low turnout election, yes it is easy to abuse. Another reason to try and reduce voter apathy. I suppose.

And its always been in pencil. The idea is that a pen running out of ink might be too faint to be seen properly but people will tender the vote thinking that it is visible, wheras the mark of a pencil will always be the same strength until the pencil runs out.

They've taken the Western Isles. Its now 30 SNP seats versus 32 for New L(ie)abour. The gap is closing and I hope this trend continues!

The way this election was carried out at the final stages has been nothing short of shambolic. It will certainly make Holyrood even more of a laughing stock than it already was. In fact, it's a pretty bad indictment of the Scottish voter if there are as many spoilt ballot papers as is rumoured. Now, fair enough, some of that is to do with the computer counting system, but apparently most of it is due to 'confusion' over where to put a cross and where to put numbers on the paper.

I live in Edinburgh (South) and we had - count 'em - 55 leaflets through our mailbox these last three weeks, each detailing *how* to vote in the Council and Holyrood elections. There were diagrams, explanations, examples. And still people managed to mess it up. My 85 year-old neighbour managed to complete hers correctly, and, in her words not mine, "it is a very poor reflection on the literacy of a significant number of Scottish voters".

While mistakes by the voters have been made, I find it impossible that 100,000 were incapable of following a simple proceedure. There are reports that some were told to fold their ballot, whilst the computers may have read them incorrectly.

Personally, I think every vote should be counted by a human.

I agree. I do not feel comfortable knowing that there are such defects in the computer system when the election of Scotland's domestic government is at issue.

I voted by post at the general election and after I heard about all the cock-ups I decided always to vote in person from then on.

I suspect that the SNP lost more votes due to this than the other parties, and perhaps this is the reason why they haven't done quite as well as expected. This will no doubt piss some people off, but if I had to pick a party most likely to be affected by the loss of the "retard vote", Salmond & Co would be pretty near the top of my list.

I'd like to agree with you, but I actually think it's Labour who will have lost out on this basis, and maybe SSP.

I would agree on the SSP, possibly Labour, but it was the "fucking English running our country, you can never take our freedom" brigade I was referring to with regard to the SNP. I'd also say that, without a doubt, Solidarity/BNP/that Christian party will have been the biggest losers as a result of misunderstandings.

Woohoo, internet!

So, did anyone speak to Dorothea Morrison before the elections? What did you think of her? I was disappointed to see someone who came across as so very patronising towards students in the leaflet James wrote win by so many votes.

Yeah, pretty much. In reasoned debate between intelligent people there are reasons for and against independence, and if someone comes to a conclusion that differs from my own then I can respect their decision. Educated nationalists, such as those at this university, are not the target here.

However, I feel that the SNP gains a great many votes from the kind of uneducated retards I have to work with during the summer, whose pro-independence views have far more to do with Braveheart-inspired anti-English racism than the economic benefits of sovereignty. I wish it weren't so.

I did some campaigning with her, and I came to realise that she's not interested in the whole social engeneering aspect of HMO Quotas, she really is just obsessed with how the town looks. Really passionate about making it and keeping it lookign as good as it can.

She is, at the end of the day, right to say that absentee landlords and students don't take good enough care of properties. Sadly, her method of rectifying this is all wrong.

I think what annoyed me was her wanting to improve town-gown relations by "educating" students about taking care of the town. I don't know, maybe I'm the only one who feels like they know how to and do take good care of the St Andrews environment, but coming across like we all need "educating" is not going to improve town-gown relations.
