Pierjumping

Does anyone know anything about pierjumping?

I've found the tidal times on the bbc website but high tide isn't until 8 on wednesday - is it safe to jump before then?

Is the whole experience any good ?

It's amazing. so much fun. I went with a bunch of biologists so they were able to tell me when was safe.
One of the best things I've ever done in St Andrews.

It's really good fun, highly recommended. You don't need to have the really high tide. When I jumped yesterday with a few friends at about 4pm, the water was a fair bit away, but it was still safe and fun :D ! There are some pictures online at http://standrews.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2209414635 as well.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/coast/tide ... 1&loc=0233 seems to suggest that if you wanted to jump, you better either be up early or jump in the early evening. I don't know how much of a gap there is around the high tide times, but you'll probably want to jump when the sun is out a bit as well :) .

I found that once the water covered the first four or five steps of the pier at the end, above the little platform, it was all good. But there are many people who should be able to say when it is safe more precisely.

Go for it, though, and then hope you have lots of fun :D !

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

You might want to be careful, just yesterday the water in the entire outer harbour (along the pier) was full of little jellyfish. I have no idea how poisonous such things are, though there are a number of marine biologists on the site that will no doubt tell you. The last thing you want is painfull stings all over your body, so lokk carefully before jumping in.

Also, this is the first time in my life that I have ever seen live jellyfish in Scottish waters, mostly I find them dead on the tide lines. They really are graceful swimmers :)

We went swimming in the East Sands bay bit today (allbeit fully clothed) and my friend saw the little jellyfish. We don't appear to have been stung though, which is nice...

Because you normally associate biologists with being able to tell you when it's safe to jump off things?

Anyway, mild confusion aside, if you're not the world's best swimmer, it's probably best to it when the tide's coming in, rather than when it's started to go out. Currents and all that.

...then again, that is only my opinion.

According to http://www.sepa.org.uk/data/bathingwate ... sp?id=9318 it is 'excellent quality' bathing water.

As someone who jumped off the pier once each month during 2006 (new year's resolution), I can't recommend peir jumping highly enough.

Read your tide tables, try to jump during a spring tide (when the water is highest) and bring a towel.

As far as jellyfish go, only one species is likely to sting you, and it's no worse than a bee sting. Certainly, I've never been stung while jumping.

Give it a go, I say.
