The iPhone is really not that much any more - my roommate ordered his yesterday for $300 (the older 4GB model.) Apparently they've figured out how to unlock it for other providers now as well (everything except youtube works.)

My current phone cost 360 pounds, and I got that free with my contract? What makes this one different?

... so i think I have enough negotiating power to get an iPhone free.

Not a chance.

This is the iPhone you're talking about. There's no way Apple are going to pass up on an opportunity to get money out of you where possible, so I find it highly unlikely you'll get it for free with your contract.

Also it's O2, they are the most expensive network in the country I've found. I doubt they'll give something as exclusive as the iPhone away for nothing, they'll expect you to pay the £270 or whatever it is.

Vodafone are far more expensive in my experience. I terminated my contract early to get away from Vodafone this year.

Yes, you won't get a free iPhone I wouldn't have thought. The iPhone isn't being sold at that price as handset only, which I imagine is where you got the price for your Nokia. This is a few hundred along with the 18 month contract.

I'd say you could get money off it though.

Don't forget in the US that it is the price of the phone (around $600, but I think the price has gone down?) AND a 2 year contract. I feel this will be the same here.

Yes. Basically, their pricing strategy sucks; I'd hate to work in an O2 shop now, and have to try to persuade anybody that anyn kind of phone whatsoever is worth that much.

The phone itself I don't think is subsidised when you buy it with a contract here in the US - it just happens to not work or be activated without the appropiate AT&T contract. My roommate got an iphone for $300, no contract, from the apple store.

Prices may go up if they ever unlock them to be used with any contract, though.

It's very easy to unlock an iPhone. I'm running mine on Orange and got the unlocking program for free. You can use a program for ZiPhone or LibertyX. It takes 5 minutes and doesn't break anything.

The only feature you don't get is visual voicemail 'cos that's O2 Specific.

Dredge or no dredge, I just couldn't let this slip out of the top 10 without having my £0.02.

The thing I love most about my iPhone is the simply ridiculous amount of data I use, for free. In the first month I used a gigabyte of data, something that'd have cost me £4000 under my old O2 contract. I'm now just shy of 3GB, 5 months down the line.

Unless you're not going to rape the data (and thus about 3/5 of the phone and most of the defining features (such as, as you say, Visual Voicemail - gimmicky, but actually useful)), I don't really see why not to just get an O2 iPhone contract. Not many others offer free unlimited data, or a bundle anything like what I use, and I don't think I use my iPhone as much as I could...

From my experience of Royce's hard drive, I doubt he needs to download any more porn for the rest of his life.

(this isn't a dig at the iphone)

To be fair, its the contract that's allowed you to get the best out the phone. I got web 'n' walk from T-Mobile, and I reckon i'm shifting near £500 a month on wap, which only costs me £7.50. If i didn't have the "unlimited" wap, i wouldn't use it.

No I idea why I dug it out. More than likely boredom. I can't even remember where I found it.

I quite like all of this unlimited business now. My new contract has unlimited data and unlimited texts, which is good because I send about 2000 a month.
