ResNet Regulations

Postby Sammy on Mon Oct 01, 2007 4:58 pm

I tried posting this thread before, but it didn't seem to work. So I'm having another go.

There is only one question that I'd like answered:

"Connection to ResNet is for accepted academic purposes only"

How strongly is this enforced?

Thanks for any replies.

Unless you do something illegal which a company contacts the university about (i.e. torrents) its not.

Speaking of odd restrictions, are outgoing SSH connections firewalled from us?

I wouldn't think so, I used SSH last year in DRA and it worked amazing (gotta love the 100MBps)...

The Sinner chatroom seems to be blocked from my resnet connection, which is a shame. The one that really annoys me is the block on the ports needed to get Valve's Steam platform to work. I miss DoD, CS:S and the nameless others.

Regarding outgoing SSH connections, it certainly worked last year but this year any SSH connection to a server that's not part of the university seems to have been blocked, which in my opinion is really bloody stupid.

I've got half a mind to contact ResNet and complain about it - I've always used SSH for messing about with my webhosting, and now I can't.

(I'm in DRA)

Edit : Oh yeah, it seems they blocked IRC too - I don't really use it at all but it's still something that makes no sense whatsoever.

Is the Chat applet blocked, or your IRC client?

Tried both the chat applet and mIRC - no dice.

They've blocked access to IRC from the university network (well, Resnet, Eduroam and the computer rooms, at least). I didn't know about the SSH one though, that surprises me somewhat - I'm glad I'm not in halls this year!

EDIT:

For those who want to access #thesinner from ResNet, I've put the IRC server on port 8080 (which is currently not blocked) - just connect to irc.zernebok.com port 8080 from your IRC client, or click irc://irc.zernebok.com:8080/thesinner. I gather the Chat page will be updated soon.

Chat page now updated. Hopefully it'll work, but if people still have issues connecting from Resnet, please email admin@thesinner.net

Yep. Outgoing SSH *definitely* blocked.

Any idea of who to complain to?

Outgoing SSH is still allowed to central.st-and.ac.uk, and from there to the rest of the world. You'll need to ask the helpdesk to enable your login for central.

Join Wiredsoc. You can then play some of those mentioned games over Resnet.
