Is The Sinner just an ex-pat community?

This message board is for discussing anything in any way remotely connected with St Andrews, the University or just anything you want. Welcome!

I'm the same, 06 intake but I've only posted a few times, actually saw the ad right after finishing reading a thread.

'04 in St Andrews, posted a few times pre-05 but didn't register until much later. It's a fun little pedantic community.

Let's hope it becomes less pedantic...

Although I find the Sinner helpful for answering queries it is probably the least welcoming board I've come across, which is bad considering I can't be the only person who found it as a potential student using Google.

Shouldn't the poll be about which year you arrived in St A?

Yeah, I am an '06 entrant undergraduate, and I come under the "I'm proper old" category, which really blows.

How do we, as members make the site more welcoming? Or is it something fundamentally wrong with the site?

I'm '01 intake, and graduated in '05 - although I feel proper old and that.

Free pedantry or cupcakes. One of the two, I'm sure.

Alternatively, we don't need to be welcoming...we could be some sort of internet paradise where everyone's knocking at the Sinner's pearly gates...

I honestly don't think there's all that much pedantry. There's very little that is nit-picky or mean-spirited.

What there is a fair amount of is people correcting others' factual inaccuracies or criticising their poorly structured arguments and being shot down for it because a lot of people are too precious to accept any kind of challenge or criticism.

Hello Fresher! Loving the freshness like!

Regarding pedantry, part of me wants to say, "it doesnt matter if you dont use all the write spellings and if you're grammer isn't totally accurate - its a message board when all said an done, and if you wanted to have your writing assessed then you wouldn't of posted it online in the first place".

But then another part of me yearns for the age when people were proud of what they had to say, and went to great lengths to ensure that they weren't misunderstood.

Pointing out factual inaccuracies (when done diplomatically and thoughtfully) is actually beneficial to a debate, as it enables everyone to form their own opinions on a basis of true fact, instead of mere speculation.

There should be more positive messages, that's for sure - if you see something you like, or you agree with, say so!

Welcome our new members with open arms!

Let's all hug again.

Hmmm...

Why not decorate the sinner in bright pink floral motifs?

[hr]

Funky flunky munky...
So someone asked me "What is it you do?". I thought about it for a minute. Then I thought about it a little more. All the while I probably looked like I was staring in to space, struggling for an answer. And I was. There was only one response I could really give.

"I make sure the shit stays off the fan."

Actually a certain amount of silly argument livens the place up a bit lol... Having said that being shot down in an arrogant and patronising way for a typo or factual inaccuracy would put me off any internet forum something awful.

Talking of trees, I saw the first Douglas fir in Scotland yesterday. It's at Scone palace, and was most huggable.

Does anyone else ever see Hear'Say written down and immediately think heresy?

I enjoy the new posters and flyers, can the site be recoloured to match them?
