You might be right, but it's not easy to get the hang of. I got quite into Trainspotting and A Clockwork Orange, but I struggled with Nineteen Eighty Four.

Some might say that St Andrews already is a real tourist hotspot. And while the 'Westport-lite makeovers' of many of the pubs in St Andrews may be regrettable, it is done because the Westport is a popular and successful pub. Not a charge that could ever have been levelled at the Red Reiver.

There used to be a train link to St Andrews long time ago, not sure of its history but I seem to recall a replica of the public notice announcing its demise in The Jigger Inn. It must have run through the golf courses. the railways were opposed in many rural and seaside towns because locals didn't wnat the unwashed 'riff-raff' from the cities urinating on their prize-winning roses. That wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference these days since most riff-raff, and everyone else for that matter, has trouble leaving their cars at home. The streets of this small town are some of the most congested I have ever seen in towns of comparable size- weekends are the worst.( and just to stir it up a bit, i don't think that there are any good pubs in St Andrew's...well maybe if Aiktims got cleaned once in a while.)

To return to the original topic and to take advantage of Jo's Dad, has St Andrews always been expensive? Certainly when I was there the rent spectrum ranged from £20-60 a week and the pubs were pretty reasonably priced (though perhaps not for a typical village in Fife). Is this a modern phenomenon?

It is difficult to make a comparison for a place that has never had a McDonalds and therefore does not have a "hamburger index".
Beer was never very cheap, although, coming from southeast England, I was not aware of it being expensive. The housing market has completely changed since the sixties, many students in those days were in "bunks" (ie lodgings, looked over by "bunkwives"). I, with a little help from the RBS (and my dad), bought a flat. It cost £2620. It was valued by Dundee surveyor, who stated that he had put a 40% uplift on it because it was in StA not Dundee, at £1600. That means that we are looking at prices over twice that of Dundee. Are they that now?

I moved to Sheffield after graduating from St Andrews and I never realised how much I was being ripped off until I left there. £5 for a sandwich, indeed!

And as a local of that shitty town I can tell you that there is no way the drink price is £2.01, almost all pints in the town cost at least £2.60 - they do however get the accomodation costs right

Though, looking at drink trends would add more complexity - I'd wager that St Andrews sells more gin per head of student population than the vast majority of other towns. Taking the Union as an example, gin is a massive 30p more than a vodka-equivalent.

Well, they must be using one stupid formula to calculate it. Because (looking at some of the universities in my locale and comparing them to the pubs around there), unless their unions have been giving away drink all year, there's no way their average price could be that low!
