How can you guarantee that you know something better than another? Let us even assume that you were one of the people who the ambulances were attending and let us also assume that the other person in question witnessed the entire incedent first hand. Now, would you suggest that you would know why the ambulances were there better than they?

I would suggest not, in such a case both parties would have equal knowledge of the event occuring.

The flaw in this argument is that if they were both witnessing the event firsthand they will both have as much knowledge of the event occurring, yes, but it is very possible for someone to know "better" about why the ambulances were there.

For example, following what you said, if two people saw an old man's cane break and the man himself fall over, they would both have equal knowledge of the event occurring. However, if one knew that the old man's cane had had a large chunk cut out from it recently, that person would know better about why the man fell relative to the person who only knew that the man fell because his cane broke.

In the original message the poster stated that they saw several ambulances outside Scott. Someone then responded that they probably saw the ones outside Haig that were summoned for Alcohol related incidents.

My reply indicated that there were several calls to Scott. I made no claim about the calls to Haig, therefore I am not claiming that you are talking rubbish.

No there were several visits by the ambulance service to Scott. They were unrelated to drink but related to a chronic medical condition of the recipient.

I assume you're not trying to say I was talking rubbish, because trust me, I know why there were ambulances at Haig better than you do, guaranteed.

Quite, but my point was in reference to the use of the word "guarantee". In order for this to be the case the person in question must have a water tight reason for assuming they know a particular fact better than any other. I used that example to show a case where one might not.

Since you talk of logic, you must understand that one requires only one counter example to a claim of for all (in this case, for all people I know better). No number of further examples can change this result.

Of course, this whole method of reasoning falls on its head if the two people know who each other are, in that case the for all is removed, but I don't imagine they do.

As the student was wearing his gown at the time, I can only presume that the Scottish Executive have finally codified the guidance emanating from the following influential public consultation:

http://www.thesinner.net/article-view.php?article=165

"'Ello, 'ello, 'ello, what do we 'ave 'ere then? A gown off the right shoulder, on North Street? I'll be buggered if I've ever seen a Scientist this far into town. You never even heard of the Mistreatment of Gowns and Trenchers (Exnihilo Consolidated Rants)(Scotland) Act 2007? You're fackin' nicked, sunshine"

To be fair, the fire brigade takes considerably longer to respond to an alarm the second, third, and fourth time around in a day, unless they haven't fully gotten back to the station by the time the next alarm goes off.

You know these sort of things if you live in Uni Hall this year.....

The University has also stated (on record!) that it finds the situation perfectly acceptable.

he fire brigade hurtled there because they have no choice in responding.

That's not quite true, is it? It may be the Fire Brigade's policy always to respond, but presumably someone, somewhere has a choice over what that policy is. It's always puzzled me that the halls, etc. haven't been able to come up with some means by which the fire brigade can be informed that they needn't turn up if a hall has a false alarm that can immediately be identified as such.

Presumably to eliminate human error in that particular regard, and prevent idiocy from killing someone, ie to err on the side of caution in case some moron decides there is no fire when there in fact IS one, and people get cooked.

This unfortunately means that we have to put up with system faults and burned toast incidents and the like, but still. Nobody will die.

Hopefully.

So were they arrested for starting the fake fire alarms?
