The Bop is about sex, people go to the Bop for various reasons, often to meet up with friends, but also to pull. The Bop is a fertile ground for one-night-stands, who cares if the same tune as last week is playing? When you're fingering X in the corner, knowing you'll be taking them back to your flat to fuck senseless in a few minutes when the harsh lights come up and the bouncers start asking people to leave.

For the less inebriated its about laughing at the unlikely unions in the Union.

The Bop is too ordinary and predictable. People in St Andrews like events and places where there is an element of exclusiveness (exclusivity?). Take for example the Lizard, with its bouncers and red rope at the door, or Starfields, with its separate VIP section. I like that the Bop is a bit more plebeian than other venues, and of course because its the Student Union it has to be inclusive, but maybe if it was a bit different each week there would be some element of surprise that would make it more appealing.

Additionally, the reason I'm not too fond of the Bop is not that they play cheesy music, but that they always play the exact same cheesy music every time I go. Cheese is good for its novelty factor but it gets old quickly.

Also, dancing to the same Nirvana song every week is awkward and annoying.

I was at the free bop last night, from 11 - 12.30 the music was constant dance and a little R'n'B. Where was the fun music to dance to? Where was the music we actually know from the radio? I was in the main bar for an hour before, and the music was really good in there!

Perhaps the union website should have some sort of application, that allows people to list ten songs they thinks should be played. Eventually if 10% of st andrews did it, there would be 7000 entries, and all the over lapping songs would allow DJ's to know what people wanna hear. Everyone in the crowd I was with didn't like the music, but cause we wanted to dance so much we put up with that. I could see that in everyones faces around me.

Or maybe it doesn't really matter what they played last night!

Changing genre on the spur of a moment will not get the desired test-case effects.

The simple formula that would need to be applied is:

1. Pick one genre/or complimentary genres
2. Advertise it well in advance
3. Play the music


The bop should play cheese if it hasn't been advertised as anything else, otherwise people will get annoyed.

I think the ideal solution would be to have more venues playing different stuff. Though obviously this won't happen anytime soon.

I agree with munchingfoo. As for it being packed, I agree it was, it was the only thing good about the bop, but it was the first bop this semester, if it wasn't packed then it's a bit shocking.

For the happiest university in the country, we sure have a lot to moan about.

I completely agree. The bop was awful, but the music in the main bar was really good.

There were probably only so many people in the bop because it was nigh on impossible to get out, and the main bar was packed too.

As an aside, there were some completely rude and idiotic people there last night. Gr.

It's still Altsoc in Venue 2, but not every week. As far as I can remember the dates this semester are February 29th, March 14th, April 18th and May 2nd, with a live music night in conjunction with MusFund in March. We're also DJing next week's Tuesday Bop for Rag Week.

Yeah, I remember sometimes really enjoying the bop in my 1st year and now (in 4th year) it's just not as good. Main problem for me is the amount of mindless dance music. I know there is sometimes more fun cheesy pop/rock towards the end but I have absolutely no motivation to get there any earlier than 12-1 and if it's on Friday it doesn't seem worth paying.
In terms of constructive change for the future, I for one am keen on the idea of theme nights...the latin nights were fun, cld also have urban, rock, rnb, 80s or 90s pop. And I don't think 1 style all night is necessarily repetitive...there's a lot of variety within a genre.
As for normal bop nights, people go for different reasons- to have a laugh with friends, to pull/flirt, just to dance or maybe a combination of these and other reasons so I think the music should reflect that variety. Granted, it's not easy and for the price I pay I definitely don't expect a world-class DJ but hopefully things can be changed.

Its about personal taste, the crowd i was with and the people near me seemed to love the music and it was personally more suited to my own taste.

The bop was very busy last night, but i don't really think its because of the music, its the first Tuesday bop back.

You can't please everyone but its my view, going to the bop quite regularly, that i don't mind the cheese, but the repetitiveness of songs being played week and week (sometimes in both Tuesday and Friday bops) gets very tedious. I think a reason i enjoyed the bop so much last night was because it wasn't the same stuff i heard last Friday.

If you want to hear some good music, and dance, and not queue for ages in the Main Bar to get a drink, go upstair to Altsoc. Every other Friday.

And as for the people who claim that Tuesday's Bop was 'awful', let me just warn you that Friday's will be about a thousand times worse. Plus, I played some new and unusual tracks, but from where I was standing everybody was still jumping up and down like crazy!

The DJ will play the same songs he plays every time in the same order, like a human jukebox, not a DJ. You will be guaranteed the best of (if there is such a thing) Dolly Parton, Bryan Adams, S Club 7, Cascada, Queen, that stupid medley from Grease, and he will almost certainly end with Chelsea Dagger or it will be the second-to-last song.
