Annoyances in the Library

Postby Senethro on Fri Feb 22, 2008 7:17 pm

The hole punch. That fucking hole punch. The one just beside all the express work stations. I'm on the verge of property destruction after its loud, semi-frequent irrythmic clacking has frayed my nerves for half an hour.

Also, anyone who doesn't carry a hankie of some description with them.

Go to the wonder and solitude of the top floor. If you need a computer, you can borrow a laptop from IT Services (although maybe not at this time of day).

If you're at an express workstation for half an hour; you're taking too long!

Now some people weren't happy about the content of that last post. And we can't have someone not happy. Not on the internet.

Yeah, I would. Except that wasn't.

There, take that Mr. "witty" sinner pedant.

Also, I learned later that it was actually a stapler. Still bloody annoying though.

lol, did anyone else find it hilarious that a whole page of the saint was dedicated to the colour of the library carpet? What a waste of time reading, and more to the point, writing such a pointless article! (did provide much amusement as to why someone would bother writing an article on such a boring topic, and the fact that our uni must have NO NEWS if that makes the grade!!!!)

I know EXACTLY what you mean.
The crazy machine stapler thing is beside the computers you sit down at and it was driving me up the fucking wall today while I was attempting to concentrate on an essay.
Luckily it was time to go to my lab class before I was driven to stapling someones face with it!

That stapler is difficult for a simple person like me to use. It scares me, and I always end up getting the staples too far into the page.

Seconded. Did noone ever teach 90% of the student body that blowing your nose is infinitely preferable to allowing everyone to hear just how ill you are by continually sniffing? It's distracting, irritating and pretty disgusting really. Always puts in mind the image of a boy at my primary school who used to wipe his nose on his jumper sleeve...

The new policy of stopping and checking people for their matric cards at the entrance is beginning to grate ever so slightly.

If you read the leaflets which are available, you'll see that this is only for a week, and it's for the library regeneration. The architects want to know which students use the library, when it's most used, etc., so they can plan the building accordingly. It's for your benefit, not to annoy people.

They used to make us show our Matriculation cards at the entrance every time. They only stopped it a few years back.

10-1 when they "regenerate" the library it will run over-budget and into term-time, when I assure you it will not be in the best interests of those who just want to get a book out.

What's wrong with the library anyway? Apart from looking like an awful example of socialist 60's brutalism on the outside it's quite cosy on the inside.

it's far too small. I guess it's probably alright if you are studying science. My lecturer from last semester came from Bristol Uni and according to him just the political library there is the same size as our library.

The sciences have their own libraries, so the condition of the main library is a bit of a moot point, although it would be nice to have a decent study space.

That all said, for a building of that vintage, it is quite nice and cozy on the inside. Not nearly as hideous as most of what was built during that period.

What I'm curious about is exactly how the usage patterns of the library are going to factor into the redevelopment. I don't see how you'd design a building differently if it's going to be used predominantly in the afternoon rather than the morning.....

Has anyone else been deterred from using the library because of the recent queues owing to the user survey. I know i have, instead opting to using the computer suite in Butt's Wynd.

Surely this means that the library will receive skewed statistics from its survey?
