I'm at a loss to know what the students would vote for these days. Donald Findlay was - certainly by the time of his second term, anyway - a well-known figure in town who was acknowledged to work hard for the students and actually care about the University. Andrew Neil wasn't a St Andrews figure at all, but he was (presumably) deemed to be someone of both note and influence, though I suspect his election was in part helped by the degree to which his principal opponent, Tommy Sheridan, polarised opinion. Sir Clement Freud was very much a return to the light-entertainment Rectors of the 1970s and 80s (and not a welcome one, in my own view), while the current incumbent is... inexplicable. My guess is that either a heavyweight public figure or an entertainer would be the best bet in terms of electability, but it is only a guess. I'm afraid I can't quite see an academic figure like Brynmor or David Carter, while estimable in many ways, quite capturing the student imagination. The Chancellorship, if it were vacant, might be a different matter.
