What's all this stuff about chickens? Anyway, how's the whole rector thing going? I heard Glasgow elected Charles Kennedy.

They did indeed, and then installed him in the most shambolic, thrown together way imaginable. The embarrassment of their Principal was palpable

Are there any rules against running fictional characters as candidates?

St Andrews already has 'The Criminologist' from RHPS, surely a Rector from real life, not a book or a film, might be good.

How about Gro Harlem Brundtland? might be busy but at least she has made some changes in the world (not to sound over the top) and would probably push for the green energy campaigns goin on around town?

guess it depends whether enough students would support such campaigns.

Perhaps they had a sextet of gown-wearing posers drag him around town in a carriage?

Oh wait...

Surely a wagon would be more appropriate? (badum-tscht)

Are we allowed former staff? David Brynmor-Thomas would be awesome.

He'd fall foul of the age limit - though as we've seen that can be waived.

What about Stelios?

[hr]

So someone asked me "What is it you do?". I thought about it for a minute. Then I thought about it a little more. All the while I probably looked like I was staring in to space, struggling for an answer. And I was. There was only one response I could really give.

Hrm - I wonder how old Sir David Carter is, maybe he'd be up for it.

He resigned from Court previously as he was appointed to the Court of Edinburgh University and cannot sit on two.

I always thought that Tom Stoppard might be quite good. Though he probably has a billion other things to do.

A good shout would be someone who likes golf then there is a faint chance that they will come up to St.A all the time.

I'm at a loss to know what the students would vote for these days. Donald Findlay was - certainly by the time of his second term, anyway - a well-known figure in town who was acknowledged to work hard for the students and actually care about the University. Andrew Neil wasn't a St Andrews figure at all, but he was (presumably) deemed to be someone of both note and influence, though I suspect his election was in part helped by the degree to which his principal opponent, Tommy Sheridan, polarised opinion. Sir Clement Freud was very much a return to the light-entertainment Rectors of the 1970s and 80s (and not a welcome one, in my own view), while the current incumbent is... inexplicable. My guess is that either a heavyweight public figure or an entertainer would be the best bet in terms of electability, but it is only a guess. I'm afraid I can't quite see an academic figure like Brynmor or David Carter, while estimable in many ways, quite capturing the student imagination. The Chancellorship, if it were vacant, might be a different matter.

An epic way to troll the University would be to nominate David Miscavige.

That's it; I'm doing it.

William Shatner would be amazing. But in all seriousness how about Robbie Coltrane? I think his mum (at least used to) live in St Andrews so he'd be up here anyway.

He is completely impartial - no politics, no opinions, nipple outline shaped like the Nurburgring. Seems perfect.
