Broken mac

Postby Rozles on Tue Apr 29, 2008 9:51 pm

I've managed to bend one of the thin metal bits inside the ethernet port on my mac after tripping on the cable. Is there anywhere in St Andrews I can get it fixed relatively cheaply or will I have to venture into Dundee/send it home to get it fixed?
Thank you

There are probably hundreds of Comp Sci students who would love to help you. If you state you're a girl, wait 5 mins, come back to your thread, you'll see that there will be hundreds of replies.

Pick the one that sounds the least like a rapist.

Is it under warranty? If so you need to take it to an apple dealer or apple shop. I don't think there is one in Dundee. There is one in Edin but I would not recommend them as they tend to take a long time. Your best bet is the apple store in Glasgow (I know thats a long trip!)

If it's not under warranty fixmymac.co.uk this guy is really good. He's based in Tranent near Edinburgh but will pick up/drop off if he's working in the area anyway.

I had to send my macbook in for a warranty repair to the service engineers in Edinburgh. Its a long way to go just to get a simple thing repaired.

Mine took about a two week turn around time just to fit a new hard drive.

It's also extremely difficult to get to via public transport, you ideally would need a car to get out to the industrial estate.

Best bet is to have a chat with ITS, they may have a tool that will either fix the pins or they may be able to recommend a better course of action.

This type of fault will not be covered by warranty anyway, so your probably better finding someone who could do it for you.

I would really recommend the Glasgow Mac store and their genius bar. Yes it's a 5 hour round trip and the joys of the X24, but if it is under warranty it would be far better than the Edinburgh store which I've heard bad things about.

Depending on the time taken to fix the problem you could have a day out in Glasgow (a great city, not just because it's my hometown) and do some other things at the same time.

Well worth the trip I say.

I would def agree, go to glasgow.

Edinburgh doesn't have a apple store per se, but they have service support network and the service support is in an industrial estate in netwongrange so extremely difficult to get there via public transport.

Take a trip to glasgow I say!

Seconded. I made a trip all the way out to Newtongrange to pick up my Mac (~40 minute bus from Edinburgh city centre followed by a 1.5 mile walk) because I'd been told it was ready. When I got there, however, I was told it would take another fortnight to repair! I then had to contact them to ask if it was ready, even though they had assured me they would contact me.

In short, terrible service, appalling communication and a decidedly inconvenient location.

IT Services recommended Glasgow too.
The mac is over 3 years old so the warranty has run out. How expensive are the repairs in Glasgow?
Thanks for all the advice so far.

I have tended to find that repairs at the mac shop out of warranty are really quite expensive. I was recently quoted £600 to fix the connection between my battery and the computer, which I thought was ridiculous considering that my computer still works fine off the mains. My guess is that the price was so high so I would just buy a new computer instead. The guy I mentioned above is much more reasonable.
