New Principal confirmed

Postby Bizarre Atheist on Tue Jun 03, 2008 11:12 am

From the email circulated today

I am very pleased to be able to inform you that the University Court is to appoint Dr Louise Richardson as Principal to succeed Dr Brian Lang with effect from January 2009.

Louise is an internationally respected administrator and scholar from the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard and we are delighted that she has accepted the challenge of leading St Andrews into a seventh century of distinguished academic achievement.

...

A native of the Republic of Ireland, Louise Richardson is one of the world’s leading authorities on the study of terrorism and political violence.

I'm delighted. Everyone loves the Irish! The IR department must be pretty pleased with her areas of expertise.

Since as I really can't be bothered looking it up myself, does anybody know if we've had a female principal in the past at all?

Just need a good rector now and the university might be on track....

Let's face it: whoever was chosen as the next principal would be lauded simply for not being Brian Lang.

A female principal? Never would have happened in Principal Irvine's day...

Well, no, because he was Principal.

As an IR student, former CSTPV intern and someone soon to be working for the Students' Association, I really could not be happier with this - just what we need. I'm sure she'll be brilliant (and apparently is a nice person too).

YouTube has an hour-long interview with her on terrorism, for those of you who are interested:

Some. Others would suspect the original post of being a hidebound criticism of the appointment of a woman - such as would have been unthinkable in the "golden age" of the University.

I just hope that an IR based Principal will throw the spotlight on IR and give the department the support it has been so starved of up until now.

Ha.

The golden age really is over. I've been saying it ever since Bishop Kennedy went.

We have an IR department? What does that do, then?

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Then was the failed suicide attack in Britain a humiliating experience for the terrorists involved?

Richardson: Absolutely. It is humiliating to come away from a suicide attack still alive...

err...what? She's not some crazy hippy type is she? This place needs a bit of discipline and above all financial prudence, not someone with years of academic learning but no real-world common sense.

I didn't realise she was Irish until I heard her speak on that video. Woo!

Everyone DOES love the Irish. Except maybe the English if they watched the youtube link (or at least the start when shes talking about her republican upbringing)...
But then again, I could just be saying that to annoy people...

You would not be a biased person to ask, of course.

I can't help but have some bias, which is precisely why I explained my background before giving my opinion.

I'd have thought someone with a strong background in IR would be the last thing IR would want as a department, no department wants the Principal treating them as their pet project. Ask English about its relationship with Struther Arnott.

Well Brian didn't really have much effect on the Social Anthropology department.
