Finding email addresses

Postby help on Sun Sep 27, 2009 5:12 pm

Hello!
I was just wondering if there is any way of looking up people's university email addresses? I've just finished taking names at the societies fayre and a lot of them are illegible!
Many thanks

Yep, just log into Webmail, go into the Address Book section, and look up the names in the St Andrews directory.

If you have more than a few of these to look up and you're connected to the network (directly or via VPN) and have Thunderbird or similar installed, try http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/itsupport/accounts/email/Thunderbird/LDAPdirectoryservices/. I've found the Webmail directory search to be temperamental, even down to being affected by the order in which you set the drop-down menu and type in your query.

Actually, hang on... I've just realised I'm on saintmail now and I can't find any links to the directory on there! Any tips?

I don't think Google have developed an LDAP client for Mail, and as such, Saintmail won't have the facility. Looks like you're going to have to use a desktop app like Thunderbird, or Windows Address Book/OS X Address Book.

For reference, the details you need to fill in are:
Server hostname: ldap.st-and.ac.uk
Port: 636
SSL: enabled
Base DN: dc=st-andrews,dc=ac,dc=uk
Scope: subtree
Search filter if present: (objectclass=StAndExtendedPerson)

Authentication ought not to be necessary.

There is a contacts button on saintmail (at the bottom of the left hand list) that returns names from the St Andrews directory. It seems to work for some of the searches but not others. For instance, I've tried a few staff, and not found any.

Aha! Saintmail search seems to be working, thanks! Now back to the sign-up sheets...

Once you've sorted the least difficult ones, PM me with the rest. I enjoy a challenge.

(Please don't post anyone's details here - even if incomplete!)

Had similar problems with the fact it demends every middle name for students who registered to the university with middle names.

I wouldn't recommend that as it is illegal (Data Protection Act) not to mention morally dubious. If you get found out by the Union I suspect the response would not be pleasant & justly so.

If someone has provided their name and userid, for the explicit purpose of identifying themselves, then I don't see how it can be illegal to attempt to decypher their poor handwriting. It would still be up to the other party to decide if I'm a suitable person to ask to help.

Thanks but I managed to get them all, apart from one or two!
