I remember walking along South Street with a friend and when we approached the now closed off-license, Alldays, some local youths, who clearly under 18, asked us "D'yer think you could by us some alcohol if we gave you the money?" We answered in the negative and they responded "Well thanks anyway."
St Andrews is tame even compared with Durham, where I've had abuse and physically objects hurled at me on several occasions for no reason other than I looked like a student. I was even physically assaulted in Durham. These things occurred in areas of Durham which weren't even what one would consider deprived council estates.
